Anyone know anything about cars please?

Re: Anyone know anything about cars please?
Following my recent relationship break up, he is getting 'custody' of the car and I need to buy something. I haven't a clue!
I'll have about $25-30k cash. Want something that's only a few years old, reliable, nice looking, can fit two kids (12 and 15) but still small and easy to get around in.
Thinking of something like a VW Golf or an Audi A3. Does anyone have any pointers please as I really don't know where to start
I'm wondering about stuff like:
Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated

- reliability
- fuel economy
- cost of servicing
- safety
- depreciation

Golf is:
reliable - especially the mk5
Go for a diesel for economy
Servicing is no more than Japanese cars
Very safe - loads of airbags, ANCAP 4/5
Low depreciation - people want them

I have not been impressed with VW dealers that's for sure.

Go for the Golf - you will get a top mk5 or even a mk6 for that money. Avoid the A3, as it is basically a Golf (same engine and mechanics) for much more money.

I'd buy it.
Not economical though - runs on premium unleaded too.

Jetta, Golf, Passat, Hyundai i30. Any one of those in diesel.
I have an i30, the cheapest of that list. Economy after 50,000 now getting really good. Average 5.0/100ks, on a run about 4.6 - Cheap servicing. You said earlier that the i30 was bigger than you wanted. It's a small car (ish) but with bags of leg room front and back.

If you go for the 77TDI model you can still have change from $35k even after options, however the options on that model are limited, but it has an economy of about 5.2l/100kms off memory. If you want better options the next level up is the 103TDI, which will come in just under $40k I believe.
If you've got the money to spend, I would buy new as second hand cars are a rort I believe (way overvalued)

Since having a Mazda, I'd absolutely recommend one to you. Cheap servicing, total reliability and good price, plus low insurance.
They're like a tardis inside. Great small car.
