I'll have about $25-30k cash. Want something that's only a few years old, reliable, nice looking, can fit two kids (12 and 15) but still small and easy to get around in.

Thinking of something like a VW Golf or an Audi A3. Does anyone have any pointers please as I really don't know where to start

I'm wondering about stuff like:
  • reliability
  • fuel economy
  • cost of servicing
  • safety
  • depreciation

Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated
The Mazda 3 has a nice little sporty hatch. Not sure on price/performance/reliability but looks quite nice. Also the new Hyundai i30 looks quite nice too.

Also beware ex company/ fleet cars... They tend to get flogged... After all the driver doeznt have to cop the long term abuse they give them... So why not have a bit of fun.....

but above all eitger take some one who KNOWS anout cars with you or get the car checked over by one of the biggies...
There are some excellent points here I had not considered, thank you.

I'd avoid an Audi, nice cars but servicing bills can be astronomical

Dunno what servicing is like for VWs, maybe worth checking this out as being a European car it could be significantly more than a japanese car.

How about a Hyundai i30 wagon deisel? Five year unlimited mileage warranty, very economical, cheap to insure / maintain . . . no hidden surprises. It doesn't set any hearts raising in the looks department though.

. . . and if it's a private purchase, I wouldn't touch any european makes (ridiculous servicing costs)

sparty, our mutual friends have that car nice motor, but too big for me, i don't need all that room. yes, the servicing is a problem for european motors (damned expensive). but i think if you don't go to the 'authorised' service place it's cheaper.

*sigh* decisions, decisions.

Yes those Mazdas are nice, my neighbour has one. I just like the European motors though ... and as he's paying for it, I thought I might as well get my money's worth!

If he's paying for it get a new one..... Its not a lot cheaper going away from the dealerships for european cars... Parts still have to get here...

"common" and more "local" cars are easier to get parts for... My oh is a panal beater... With the hail damages they were getting in they had to wait MONTHS for some body parts...

The Golf definitely does tick all of those boxes. You can pick up a 77TSI for approx $30k on road new I think. I just bought the Polo and am more than happy with it. Most people say the newer VWs drive like much bigger cars than they are, yet have all the benefits of the small car.

Ah well if he is paying then a whole different ball game but you do have to pay the servicing and running costs. Go for a Golf or Audi diesel IMO.

Just had my Passat 15,000km service done (first one) and it was $237. Pretty reasonable I'd say.

JUst checked my Jetta records and also normally around the $250 for each 15,000km service.

You'd know that from the Eos though?

I've never quite understood why people have a high opinion of them. VWs are very overrated.

With your kind of budget a Honda is what I'd go for. Failing that: a Mazda or a Toyota.
