Anyone Else Doing The Same As Us ????

Hi All,

Not been on here for a while sorry, trying to get my head round the fact we are leaving on the 7th Feb

Well, in regards to my question above, is anybody just going with the clothes on their back and the clothes in there suitcase or do I feel like the only one for a reason

We are in the process of selling EVERYTHING and are living back at the folks houses, not ideal but it gives me and the hubby a chance to be around the family until we go

We had planned on selling the house, selling the car and working away with a nice little sum to start our new life, HOW WRONG WERE WE !!!! Hence the reason above, we will be leaving with about £3k, and leaving behind my house and my loan, ALL of which will need to be paid from OZ. Not ideal I know, but it has come to crunch time, 'Do we stay and ride it out and possibly never end up going'? or 'Do we bite the bullet and just go' ?

The tickets are booked, the accommodation for the first 20 days is booked and then we are on our own

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated, that way I can put my mind a rest and be glad we are not the only ones absolutely sh***ing ourselves !!

Donna & Pete.

The answer to this one does vary quite a bit depending on whether or not you have prearranged jobs to walk into when you get here ?
Can only work off the facts supplied above, but if you are going to be servicing a $1,400 a month mortgage (plus your avg min $1,400 a month rent here), that's approx 3k a month you have to come up with the moment you arrive.

You will find the initial outlay to furnish a rental and get you started in the first month (especially if you are just arriving with literally with the clothes on your backs) can be quite a few thousand dollars.

You may well have super duper well paying jobs to walk into already, but if not, please make sure you have a plan B.

HI

can't you rent your house out and at least that way you will get some rent back for it.
we are in the same boat as we thought we would be out there by now but we cant sell our house. we have been looking into renting it. its not ideal as it will still cost us about £100 a month to rent it out but as we cant sell it there is not alot we can do. we have dropped out price alot already and still havent had any luck.

we will have about £10k to arrive with and im hoping that will be enough (there are 4 of us) but im very nervous about not having enough money and like you i will have some finance to still pay (we were going to clear this when the house sold) which isnt a good start but we do still really want to go.

i thought the stressful part was trying to get the visas but now i realize it was just the start.

where about are you going to?? we are off to perth.

good luck and i hope it all works out for you.

Well we came with only our luggage, BUT we had sold our house.
Personally I think you will really struggle with that little amount of money if you don't have a job to go straight into, and even if you do it will be pretty hard for a while.
We are in Adelaide being one of the cheaper places to live. We pay $280 per week (going up soon) BUT when you first love in your have to pay your bond. I think normally 6 weeks rent.
We have two second hand cars, which are expensive here. The cheapest of which is a Toyota Corolla, 10 years old, and that was $2k, without stamp duty and rego.
Furnature is not cheap here either. We decided to go for cheap stuff and it is near impossible to FIND cheap stuff. Once you have been here for a while it gets easier, but it is a mind field to start with.

Freecycle was good though, we managed to get a tv, a washing machine, a tumble dryer, 4 clothing rails and hangers, and dining table and chairs, a french dresser and some cups, glasses etc.
Garage sales can be good but you have to get there early. We picked up a fridge for $20 which is still doing us well.

Good luck!!!!

I did a similar thing, no job, however a long while ago now. I had the bonus of having very close cousins here, and my Aussies wifes unknown family here. Never had to rely on the wifes family or my cousins, but we did rely on the wifes established freinds. (mattress on the floor in the spare room type of thing, wife was is a nurse so we didnt have to put up with that for long) You probably need to get out and about asap and establish contacts.

Depends on what your husband does for a living, I cannot even guess what the working conditions are like in Perth. However if you were arriving in Melbourne and wanted to take on anything you would definitely still get a job.

Thanks to everyone who has replied :)

We are renting our our house for the time being, or until things pick up, my cousin is currently renting off us and will continue to do so until she finishes Uni.

Our commitments would be £350.00 (or there abouts) a month that I will have to pay, until the house sells, IF it sells, we are looking to have hopefully sold by September 2010.

We do have friends in Perth that have offered to put us up for a few weeks after we come out of the holiday rental, which will help, and they have offered OH a few weeks work.

OH is a welder / fabricator so things on the job front hopefully won't be too bad. I will take anything that brings in some money. The plan for my OH is to line up as many interviews as possible in the weeks before leaving for us.

Once again, many thanks for all the replies. If anybody thinks of anything else that could be useful to know, please drop me an e-mail.

Donna.

Hi Donna, good luck to you both. Where in perth are you heading? We went to validate a few weeks ago and on the way to Rockingham noticed one of the large companies there, think it was BOC had a sign up outside asking for welders.

If you have not been before it is a large industrial area on the shore front where the grain terminal is, and there is a ship builders there also, so have a look on google and email his cv to as many companies as possible.

Good luck
Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Thanks for the reply.

We are initially heading for Waikiki near Rockingham to stay with my parents ex neighbours, but we are very interested in looking around South Suburbs.

Many thanks for the pointer on the job front, I will take a look on the web.

Where abouts are you heading ?

Many thanks
Donna.

Hi Donna, we're still not sure where we will be heading to, we still have to sell our house yet! We have friends both north and south of the river and have seen a few areas where I think I could settle. I haven't seen Waikiki but been to Rockingham, the sea is gentler there than some of the other beaches we have visited.

(My husband thinks the jobs were at Austal but we are not sure).

Anyway, good luck with the job hunting and the move.

Re: Anyone Else Doing The Same As Us ????

We have been in Rockingham (which I highly recommend, on first impressions) for just under 2 weeks now from UK.
We arrived with our double luggage allowance and just 15 teachests on route.
No jobs to go to and only around A$70k to start up our new life.
We have a property in Uk rented out, at a slight loss which we are subsidising, hopefully that will be worth it in the longterm:unsure:
We intend renting for the foreseeable future over here and using our small lumpsum to start or buy a small business or 2.
Scary, but much more of an interesting life than being a wage slave in dreary UK:thumbsup:

Good luck Gaz and hope things work out for you both. Very brave!

If we have still not sold up then I think we will end up renting out next year and subsidising mortgage here, need to make up the cost of validation trip first!
