If nothing = [1000's of hours of my favourite documentaries and comedy shows & radio shows] for 40 euros a YEAR thats fine by me. The users seed to keep their ratios up, therefore every torrent, even the old ones are incredibly fast.

Its the only torrent site I've used where my connection actually maxes out speed wise.

I'd leave it with the personal abuse, it doesn't become you Hutch.

Another take on the Usenet approach and wait times, if you use something like Nzbplayer (http://www.nzbplayer.com/howto.html) you do not even have to wait beyond the first part of the files.
For them that do not know, usenet files are often uploaded in parts, so if part 1 of 46 is in, that is the first 15meg of 700meg, then when this first part is in, you get to watch, it continues to download in the background, adding the parts as they come in. Close to on demand instant viewing.

usenet is great for the popular stuff. But if you want any media that is a little more obscure or specialist, anything that strays a bit too far from "popular", then usenet is actually very poor.


usenet - no ratio watch, fast downloads, practically everything is available as soon as it is commercially released. Downsides are that you have to pay, and the range of available media isn't actually that great. On top of that, the whole thing is really a bit of a dog's breakfast that feels cobbled together and seems like it could break at any minute....that's because usenet was designed for sharing messages in group discussions, not episodes of ugly betty.

torrents (not public ones) - you have to follow the rules and upload. downloads are sometimes very slow. There are some security concerns. But on the plus side, there is a far greater range of material available, no $$ required, the quality of material that you download is more reliable as it comes under community scrutiny. It is also far easier for the average joe to set up.


edit - here's another way to compare the two. Woolworths is a pretty good store, it has a pretty broad range and I can pop in there whenever I want and get what I'm after pretty quickly. If I want 3litres of milk...woolworths. Bag of crisps? woolworths. Bottle of coke? yep you guessed it.

But if I want a richer choice, better variety and better quality, I have to spend a lot more effort... I need to head off to the deli for freshly baked pastries, into the fishmongers for a nice whole snapper, over to the butcher's for some osso bucco and a decent steak, then maybe I'll stop off at a chocolate shop and spend an extortionate amount of money on a small box of chocolates too (but they come in a nice box, so it must be worth it!).

I'll agree that if you're just using nzb files then you are at the mercy of the editors on Newzbin and co, but if you're using headers then the material is usually there, plus on a lot of usenet groups people are very good at filling requests, but you do have to put the effort in.
Even if you don't want to get your hands dirty with something like XNews, Newzbin allows you to header search though an easy interface.




Not sure where you get these 'feelings' from, but over 365 days retention on Giganews, coupled with SABNZB or NZBDrop certainly doesn't feel that fragile.

Trying not to fan the flames of usenet vs. torrents, but...

I took asprilla's comment to more or less say that there is a use for both, and I agree, I use torrents for most UK TV, usenet for most movies.

A years retention does limit what is avaliable. The movie "Urga" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103176/) being one of my examples, I did not find it on usenet.

The days of my directly downloading and checking headers are long long gone for me, just too many. Searching is still good on several sites, like searching raw as it calls it on newzbin, but I never found Urga. No point in making and waiting for requests, when you can just go and get it another way

Both usenet and torrents come in usefeul to me.

Not sure how you end up in the red, with all the free torrents. The free leach of the week should give you enough of a regular buffer to download a lot of even old stuff that you can not seed back. I am happy with the box. I never have had to deal with mods (in over 4 years) so I do not know what attitude they have.

Ditto... it's just a case of leaving what you download open to upload 24/7. As for the Mods only had to deal with them once. When I first started I opened up two accounts as I couldnt get through on one because of a password issue. I found the mislaid password which meant I had two accounts on 1 ip address. Luckily I knew that would cause issues and even luckier I knew how to use and contact them via Mirc and talked to them direct, which saved my bacon. Since then I've not had an issue. I'm on a ratio of 3.2 to 1 at present.

because i downloaded hi di hi series 1 kenny everett not free torrents i know but most of the free ones r not to my likeing. ok u like the site fair enough my openion is there to strict wiv their rules and ive quit because of this and every 1 is entitled to have an openion on this kind of thing. but anyways ive cancled my account on there now and found 2 better ones demonoid and torrent leech. torrent leech i no the owner personally so im quids in now 4 what i want anyways and she even said the boc is a totel waste of space and afew people on here av said about it with the mods so its not just me at the end of the day anyways thats my rant lol im happy now wiv these to sites the box is in the bin now 4 me.
