I recall the case of a man who dropped some litter while out drunk in London. He crossed the entire city, using buses, the tube and walking, and a few days later he got a fine for it - they had tracked his every step across an entire city. Without considering the obscene waste of manpower and resources this must have taken for a fifty quid fine, the issue of permanently monitoring everyone's every step is a serious one. There is a line between public surveillance and a spy-state, and the British CCTV architecture crosses that line.

There's many things I don't understand and most of them I have no intention of ever trying to. It's a mental illness so incomprehensible to most of us.

What bothers me about when this happens is that it did not happen until now - and yet it was there inside him all this time. Think of all the chances he would have had to do this in the past - I'm sure plenty of people in the town are thinking such thoughts "he sat next to me on the bus yesterday" etc. Horrible.

To understand it, is a possible tool for prevention. Personally I think the perpertrator wants to be infamous and stamp his mark on as many people as he can. Just my view... god knows what really makes them tic.

I'm opposed to compulsory DNA files on anyone. It doesn't stop crime, it aids identifying criminals that's it. It won't stop repeat offenders as the parole & sentencing system allows criminals to be freed.

The problem with having everybody on a DNA database is that it won't stop at identifying criminals. There may well come a time when anyone with a genetic disposition for a particular illness will be excluded from health insurance. Carriers of certain diseases could be sterilised. More affluent members of society will gain access to choose perfect, intelligent, tall, blonde children....................................

We knew who Bin Ladin was, we had DNA, yet still couldn't catch him for 10 years.

They are more likely to be psychopathic and / or sexually deviant.

It's awful. I hope to god he hasn't killed her but the odds are getting worse every day

Both of those are mental illnesses in my book and were what I meant.

On a different continent- I am cheered by the news that the little boy with Down's syndrome has been found alive and well. His poor mum must have gone through the wringer, but how heartening that so many people came to help.

So if they have arrested the guy, but not found the child, then it is suggesting the worst yeah?

Don't they say most kidnappings they are killed within 3-4 hours..

That's what someone here said but I haven't checked it out. They have arrested him - interestingly they say he gave her a lift a few days ago but she was obviously delivered safely. I wonder if he thought about taking her then and backed out, or did something he wanted "silenced". The whole is very grim. The bloke in question has daughters of that age!! Why would he do something like this?? The parents will be in absolute hell right now.

I do hope they have the right man, they must be pretty certain, can you imagine his life if he is found to be innocent?

Although so far the evidence points to his direction - they are waiting on forensic evidence to come back on his vehicle

I think they must be certain or they would have fought harder to retain his anonymity.
