Doubt you will get much interest here - tried before. OZ / NZ are particularly carnivorous societies. Too much income at stake to be worried about stuff like that - did you not know that the animals here go willingly to the slaughterhouse?

I have to agree, there is just too much money involved. If it is deemed necessary why is it not possible to be more humane ? The problem is because we are seeing increasing numbers of farmers going to the wall nothing will be done to make things more 'difficult' or expensive for those still producing.

Oh and thought I'd better add before anyone thinks Im just commenting to instigate the riot .... this has been going on for a very long time, the only way it will change is if people stop drinking milk. It is all about supply and demand, people want their cheap milk so the babies are dispatched at minimal cost. It is down right horrible the way they are handled and there final days are just full of fear and trauma and it is heartbreaking but what would be a kinder solution ?? Would people want the price to go up on their milk so the calves get fed ? I doubt it cos majority of the population just cover their ears, shut their eyes and carry on sticking their heads in the sand.

Grow the calves until about 24 weeks (not in crates but free) before slaughtering and produce more veal!
I agree that shouldn't be allowed - slaughter in Australia, and then ship.

There are some producers that look after their calves. Barambah Organics for one.

But no, I don't drink milk - I'm intolerant to it. I do however occasionally consume products made with it, so I can't really polish my halo.

I drink milk as does everyone in our house but I don't see the connection between cruelty and milk to be honest.

A young female (heifer) has her first calf at two years of age. The calf is taken away, usually within 12-24 hours of birth, and the mother is milked to capacity. She is ready to conceive again about three weeks later, and every three weeks after that. She is put ‘in calf’ again at her second or third heat, and milking continues for some 10 months after she has given birth. She is rested for several weeks before the next calf arrives, then the cycle continues for as long as she can continue to produce enough milk to be a “profitable unit”.

i hadn't seen veal in the uk for years before we came out... The whole milk thing is probably why we see it in every supermarket shelf here
