Nearly everyone from the former Yugoslavia seems to have a surname ending in -ic (pron. "itch"). So the -ic seems a little redundant. Don't you think they could agree to a convention to drop the -ic and save a lot of wasted syllables over a lifetime?

It means son or daughter of..... so she is the daughter of Ivan.. simples..

In Russia its ...ov or ..ev for sons, and .. ova or ..eva for daughters simpler way of identifying people. It's called the patronymic, and people introduce themselves by their first name and patronymic in those countries.
