4 legged lawnmowers

Plus they are cute, great pets, affectionate, easy going, look awesome, easy to keep.
Not as damaging as a goat, albeit you need dog proof fencing forrem.

Theres a few round here withem, and a Alapaca farm up Mt Mee, plus a few ppl have camels round here too.

FACT forya, did you know, Australia has more camels than Saudi !!!

Mate for fear of the RSPCA watching this, a fella down in the village, whos son went to school with mine, held Camel fighting contests.

Now anyone who knows camels, knows 2 males together can spell trouble, specially when the female ( sow ) i think.. is on heat.

He used to hold competitions, on which camel would win. Thing is, camels dont bite when fighting, lol.. they just grunt and push each other.

So the compo was just a case of which one backs down first.

Im sure you would have loved it, especially cos the fella also owns the pub !!!!

Firstly there's far more to keeping alpacas than you might think, You can't just buy a couple of little ones, if you want small ones you will have to get a mother with a cria in tow. They are very social animals and it's cruel to have just a few of them, I would say a minimum size is one mother, cria and a guard male to look after them.

Decide if you can cope with the yearly shearing too, can you find a shearer in your area as they are very scarce. We found that shearing isn't just a man coming to do it all for you, you end up doing a lot of hard work. Personally shearing is the biggest reason not to have any.

They do spit, but normally only at each other or if you try and touch a baby whilst it's mother is near by. If you do get spat at then its 2 showers minimum to get rid of the stink, a few days if they manage to spit in your ear or up your nose. never stand between 2 females at feeding time, thats a guaranteed flob in the ear.

Where to get some, try here http://www.alpacaseller.com/index.php?Country=Australia

you will also need to be able to castrate the males, give 5 in one injections and ADE injections. You could get a vet out to do it but it soon gets too expensive for that.

Toenails.... least said about that the better, apart from you do need to clip thier nails at least twice a year, and they don't like having it done. And I didn't like doing it.

Not much else to say except they most definately are not pets, they are probably the closest to a pet of any farm animal, but still you wont be having an intimate cuddle with one any time soon.

Hope this helps

Re: Alpacas help

Cheers for the reply Arkon.

Debs went to Ekka last year, and was chatting to a fella who breeds and shows Alpacas, if I am right , i recall him saying that.. Llamas are far more easy going, and pet-friendly than alpacas. Albeit I may have that Skew-whiff !

We are aware of Shearing, toe nails, etc and know of a guy who, does the rounds, to shear the Alpacas.
We also have professional shears for our own dogs ( sounds silly, but they are very similar shears to those used for Alpacas, and sheep ) and are willing to give it a go.

We need some 4 legged grass munchers, and sheep are a no no, and so are goats.. so its either Alpacas, or Llamas.

I wasnt aware of the correct way of purchasing. Or desexing, and other stuff.

All I am aware of are Halcyon? is that correct, and we cannot import alpacas from nsw.

Early days yet, have spoken with a fella in Samford today, and arranging to see him in a week or 3. Also kev has put me on to someone, so will follow that up.

We also need animals that are sociable, with humans and dogs, albeit not TOGETHER
