Re: ALDI comes to Perth
Excellent, and we only have to wait at least 2 years...!
"DISCOUNT supermarket Aldi won't be in Perth for at least two years as the company begins its hunt for a distribution warehouse." http://www.perthnow.com.au/business/...-1226576479902 |

Re: ALDI comes to Perth
That has to be good for us over here in the East as well..... Aldi going national will be totally freaking out the big two.
Aldi definitely brought competition and changed the Aus Supermarket landscape more than any other single factor. Go there in your droves and stick it up them. As for Texcos coming to Aus, no need .... Coles is morphing into Tescos slowly but surely.... Coles have changed beyond belief in the last 6 years. I think their imported UK management have done a brilliant job. |

Coles has changed almost beyond recognition compared to when we arrived in 2007. I always heard they brought in a whole load of Asda management, no idea if it's correct that it was Asda, but I know they brought in a lot of senior UK staff. I'd say the changes are improvements so far but I don't know that Australia needs a Tesco (or any other UK supermarket) copy. I quite like the smaller Australian supermarkets.

I'm not sure if it needs a Tesco clone, but it certainly needs a disruptive entrant to the market to drive competition and the benefits that flow therefrom. I'm not convinced that Aldi is that disruptive player, despite the inroads they have already made - I think their reputation is one of low cost and budget items. I really like Aldi's home brand cheese straws - they are certainly as good as their M&S counterparts back home, and infinitely better than the horrible ones in Coles and Woolies. We took a load up to the inlaws, and MIL ended up throwing them away after we left, citing not wanting to have cheap foods in the house. If they want to play a more disruptive role, Aldi need to up their game in terms of perceived quality and store presentation I think. Oh, and number of tills open! Hopefully it will come. S |
Re: ALDI comes to Perth
Are they going to Adelaide as well.... I'd forgotten they weren't there.
If not seems strange as there is only 400K difference in the population. Surely the distribution proxmity to the East would make up for that 400K shortfall. |

I've certainly noticed that when a senior manager is trotted out for a TV interview about something they're almost always British.

The change in both the big players has been dramatic during that period... changing far more in the last few years than the previous 25 years that I've been here. It's been a most welcome and very overdue change as well. I still reckon Aldi was the main catylyst though. |
