Adding subtitles to foreign language dvds...

Hi
I know it looks like this thread should be in a completely different forum, but I just though that maybe somebody here would know.

Is it possible to add English subtitles to foreign language dvds that don't include any subtitles?

I have heard that it is possible to add subtitles by unlocking(?) something that is already installed on the dvd...?? But perhaps that is just for English language dvds, used for adding subtitles for the hard of hearing. I vaguely remember reading that all the information is already written on the dvd, something just needs unlocked/ changed/ activated for the subtitles to show?

Does anyone know anything of this or does it all just sound too much?? (Maybe a little from collum A, and a little from collum B!)

Any advice is welcome! Apart from smart comments about watching films with subtitles, of course!! :p

If there aren't any English subtitles on the DVD, then you can't add any.

not usually

I recently bought a french DVD with no subtitles and the only way I could watch it was by copying the DVD to a file on my computer and downloading subtitles from

http://www.opensubtitles.org/en

if you're not technical it may be simpler just to buy a copy with english subtitles
