I've done about 48 hours this week. It's the norm. Get paid overtime for anything over the standard 40 hours in my contract though. So I quite happlily work longer, especially in the winter.

I'm present at my employer's premises for about 37 hours per week. Usually have 1.5 hours lunch, some days leave early if I've stuff to do. Can't remember ever having to work late in 8 years here. Actual work carried out each day, between 1 and 4 hours. Rest of the time browsing the web, mucking about with colleagues...

Re: 70 hours a week

I work 22 and half hours a week. Some mornings I have to go in early for meetings but no more than half an hour early, we don't get paid for that but can get time in lieu which I never end up taking

Hubby is a permanent tradie and he does 6am-4pm Mon - Thurs and 6-1:30pm on Friday, and that includes an hour overtime each day for him.

I average 50 - 60 hours a week depending upon how busy it is. There are some times on my contract but it also states that I have to work whatever hours are required.

Re: 70 hours a week

I used to work whatever hours were needed to get the job done. First week of the month was always hectic and I'd do some very long days but I'd try to claw back a few hours later in the month so on average I'd only work 35-40 hours a week.

Geek is never really off duty. Works in the office (when he's in town) about 8am-6.30pm most days, comes home for dinner, does work at home, is always contactable by phone or email, does international con calls and web demos late at night or early morning, does some work on a weekend, almost always flies after hours or very early morning - I'd hate to put a figure on it.

(And has just completed a Masters, carrying on to get his MBA. Good job he's young and fit.)

Sounds like my last job. It was a salaried position that meant I got paid no extra. When I first started I would be in the office at 7 (even though it took an hour to get in) and would be there until 6.30 everyday. Then I would come home and do another hour or two. After 6 months I realised that no matter how many hours I did I still wasn't getting on top of things. The reality was that our dept was severely understaffed. So from there on I would start at 8 and leave at 5. Every now and then I would do an hour at home, but only if it was urgent. It was, however one of those jobs that did require me to be on con-calls with many places around the world at the same time and given that it was a US based company and they never work outside of hours I would be on calls at 2am. On average I would have 2 or 3 of these a week. One was scheduled every week for 6 months at 11.30pm on Friday nights and would go for two hours. That one was the last straw that made me look for another job.
I too was forced to travel outside of office hours (company policy).

To be fair though, I was paid a shit load and I think you do have to take this into consideration when taking these roles. I hated that job, but I never whinged about it because I knew I was on a wage that was over the odds.

I work 45 hours a week (standard engineering hours worldwide) but would happily do a lot more as I am a scumbag contractor whore and get paid for every minute that I work.

Re: 70 hours a week

I haven't had a job with paid overtime since I was 16/17. The only job I've had in Oz was for a charity and I wasn't there for the money, which is just as well but it was not bad for a second household income.

The Geek gets paid a good wage but also enjoys his job, which I think is far more important. If there comes a time when he doesn't like it, it's up to him to change it.

We learned long ago that our relationship suffers if we both work at that level, as we were when we met. Being on the same project was even worse, we never stopped talking shop  (Yes I married my contractor :o )
