Besides Vegan food, Ramen is the new big thing in Melbourne. They are busy trying to perfect it here.

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
You're in Sanur? As I said on another thread we went there for the first time last year after many years of Seminyak. I was really disappointed with the food. All seemed to be "international" restaurants serving big, cheap, meals - and from following a few pages and forums it seems like that's what a lot of Sanur expats and visitors want. We had one good local meal and I suspect that's what gave me my first Bali Belly in nearly 20 years.
Seminyak has a much better dining scene, from local to fine dining international. Unfortunately these days it's also gridlocked.

Fly back to Melbourne tomorrow night.
Wifes had Bali Belly bad for 24 hours and the remnants ever since. We think it was from one of those kids on the street and her giving him so dosh for trinkets.
Me I've got guts of steel..... touch wood.

Oh I could give you a list of what I think are great restaurants in Seminyak but I guess it depends what you're into.

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
Seminyak is where we stay on the odd occasions when in Bali. I agree with the above poster the dinning is fine there. For the price rather good. I'd hazard to say, as good as most Melbourne chow houses. The area is not entirely your Bogan Aussie holiday maker, but a large component of Europeans as well. Hence, I've had some very decent meals in that location.
IMO , Melbourne is highly over rated, with the latest fad Ramen, being a further example of screwing over the hipster set and the naïve, in over pricing and making the simple act of eating out more than it really should be or is. Not a fan of Bali, overall, but give me a perfectly affordable dining experience with adequate choice to rip off Australia any old day.
Some fall for perhaps too heavily for the growing 'tired' Melbourne hype and growing Hobart attempt to pull 'em in '........

Here's my favourite. I haven't found anything as cheap here yet. Especially when you take that 10pct government tax and 6 pct service fee into consideration and the 33pct less serving size.
Booze admittedly is far far cheaper here, by a massive margin....but food, not compared to the Ethnic restaurants around me.
Check it out..... All the menus are similar prices in the "Ethnic" places. across the whole of the North in the Burbs.
Not had one meal anything like you get in any of the places in High St Preston. Probably as least twice as much to choose from on menus if not more as well.
Typical asian menu.... Melbournes North.

Totally disagree on the Asian eating so far, it's not cheaper here either. Our next Burb along to the East....Preston, is just about 100 pct Asian restaurants, filled with asian eaters, from all denominations. they cater for the locals, which is probably 60pct Asian. and the locals want what they are used to. There would be well over 30 Asian restaurants in Preston, probably 50.

I did say I would not go to Bali for the food alone. In fact I wouldn't go for any reason outside of a quick break, consisting of short flying time, that is quality accommodation in comparison with the rip off Australian rates expected for very little. I can't get your Asian menu up, but at a guess, likely just a little above food hall prices here in Perth. As you say the alcohol prices impact to make the overall experience not exactly cheap in Australia.

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
Food has been rising in price in Asian destinations for sometime. Thailand is nowhere near as cheap a destination as it was, yet folk still remark on its cheapness. Only results in the market further adjusting prices accordingly of course. But without doubt countries like Malaysia still offers value for money, in my book, with five star hotels a little over $50 for a double in cities like KL, in prime location and all expected amenities. Even stayed two nights at a back packers in Kuching, Sarawak, which cost something like $8 a night, just to sample the wares, in a matter of speaking. Perfectly adequate. Price included a serve yourself breakfast. Room a bit small, but had air con and fine for sleeping, if not lingering, but hey for $8 whose complaining. The Malay folk running the place, more than friendly. We being far older than the average twenty something there were made very 'welcome'. Some of the Westerners there, had been at the place for a couple of months. Mellow place to hang, and handy to everything required.
I didn't find the food in Kuching, very cheap.(middle range) Rather missed the Indian food far more evident on the Malaysian mainland, but with time found a couple of great chow places, one which would bring the food to the next door pub which both proved to be excellent overall in price and definitely quality. (a pint being about $A4)

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
I have never really considered Bali a food destination.
When we go to visit my wife's family in Italy, somehow we always manage to find a decent place.
Hong Kong is another special food destination.
India and the Middle East. Lebanese cuisine is to the Arab World what French/Italian is to the Western World.
You can find some excellent Indian food in the Middle East as well, due to the enormous expat population.

Coburg, where I live in Melbourne, is "The" suburb for Middle Eastern food, I'd hate to guesstimate how many Middle Eastern eateries we have of all types somewhere between 50 and 100 I'd say.. I do know that locally it's the Egyptians that have won the gurnsey as having the best falafel.... Lots of Lebanese and Turkish places and all stops in-between. Big call calling this place the best in Aus for Falfels but they are definitely very very very good.

To gain a better result you would need to compare it with a similar populated city in size and composition. KL has some worthy Middle Eastern chow houses these days. Only went to one on recommendation and it didn't disappoint.
I used to live minutes away for years from London's Middle Eastern centre in the Edgware Road close to Marble Arch. Just the street ambiance there was not to far removed from a ME souk. Great food and very authentic. One thing I really miss about London is the ability to enter most every culture. Sure saves a lot on airfares if not especially flush. I guess Melbourne and Sydney are heading in that direction.

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
I read the menu sounds cheap enough for sure. Love Middle Eastern food, so would definitely give that area a whirl when in Melbourne next. But we must compare oranges with oranges. Wrong to compare a holiday island attracting largely Bogan Australian tourists and increasing numbers of Chinese with a city the size of Melbourne.

One last go, this is our local Indian, been going here since about 1987. Twas one of the first in Melbourne. It's pretty darn good. I think it takes the biscuit on prices, as do so many around here. I guess Beoz is right in some regards, competition means cheap prices, God knows how many eateries are along Sydney road, it would have to be many 100's.... It's also totally indicative of my problems when travelling overseas as a food tourist. Read the reviews look at the prices. So many places like this around here. I reckon My wife and i will walk the 7 minutes it takes to get there tonight and breath a sigh of relief that we are back amongst the good stuff..... Plus a Vindaloo really is a Vindaloo from this place.

Ahh but it's not all roses. I'm back to the 12 dollars minimum Pint More like 14 buck average. Almost everywhere else is cheaper. Not sure how that works.
Cheapest decent curry in Aus?

I think this part of Melbourne is already there.

Alcohol prices are outrageous in OZ these days. Government tax for the most part, but it certainly raises the cost of going out here, especially when a couple of drinks can cost more than the meal.
I do know Sydney Road. Make a point of going there every time in Melbourne. Haven't been back for eight years now, so expect more changes over that time.

Re: **** living in Melbourne.
Can't complain about those prices. Melbourne, one would assume, should be moving onto some 'quality' chow houses, with the growth in the Sub Continental population in that city. Usually a good indicator is to go where the ethnic group, of the particular restaurant eat.

Got to admit, I cannot think of a Chinese restaurant I could confidently recommend. Save for the ones in the City in China town around Little Bourke St. Chinese food here is a totally different experience to the UK one. It's all Yum Cha/Dim Sum breakfasts here at its best..
Our local good place is in High St Preston, it's very showy and seats over 500. We're not fans of it, Rather go to the smaller more traditional Vietnamese and Thai places all around it. Having said that, I do know the local Chinese flock there in extended family loads.... hence it gets very crowded and noisy.
