work help

hi all confused about work permits etc, can anyone help ?!
my partner and I (british)were planning to come to the island for few months staying with family, and working abit, and if we liked it stay abit longer, we are both entertainers, and noticed a lack of entertainers in Barbados, maybe thats why if you can't work their!
Have read previous postings about immigration and permits, sounds hard, is this all true, and would we struggle to be allowed to work to entertain you all!
Many thanks x

Re: work help

You would both definitely need work permits to work here (unless you have citizenship). It can be difficult if you're trying to get a permit for a job that a National could do - you really need to prove that a) the demand is here for your line of work, and b) that you are qualified to do that work. Getting a work permit is a detailed and lengthy process, and it's easy to make a mistake or not understand part of it. That's why employers sponsor the permit for the potential employee and almost always make use of their lawyers, to ensure the process is done properly.

As for whether there is a demand for entertainers, I can't say for sure but you could try looking online.

Good luck!

Thats a very curious comment.. what kind of entertainers are you.. The island is loaded with Singers, Dancers, actors, musicians and even a couple of magicians. You may mean a lack of entertainment venues, or areas to showcase entertainment.. but certainly not entertainers.

as has been said.. Work permits are very difficult to come by and unless you can totally prove there is no one currently doing what you do, there is a demand for what you do, and you have the credentials to prove you can do what you do..

I wouldn't, if I were you, try to come here and work with out the work permit. you will be unceremoniously escorted to the airport, with or without your belongings and sent to where you come from..

Hi Kez

One of the things i would love on the island and i feel is missing is a cabaret night spot - a place to dress up have a meal and see some cabaret acts.

However I am not sure i would want that to just be british/english acts and im not sure you would actually find a demand - the people i know who come to Barbados both as visitors and to work are trying to get away from england and the costa del sol type thinking.

There is a cultural show that offers meal and disco after (roots & rythms at the Plantation) but its not a cabaret night. They dont use the venue a lot on other nights so maybe you could approach them with any show ideas.

However to get an entertainers licence mabye difficult because Barbados is very hot on promoting and preserving its own culture and I am not sure they would see any financial benefits to Barbados as an island to allow Brits to make money off their limited tourist income.

Dips, have you been to the Plantation Theatre? It's pretty much what you are describing... ;)

Pricey, though. We had some guests staying with us who took us there and I kept thinking "this is costing them a fortune!" Great show, though.

Doh! I just realized you mentioned it already. Sorry, everyone.
