Default Work in Duty free outlets

Hi

I am thinking of moving over to the island and was wondering how things are employment and visa wise

I worked on cruise ships and also on land in many fine jewelry companies and was wondering how easy it would be to get a job with one of the duty free retailers on the island

thanks for any input

The first question is do you have the correct status to be able to work on the island?.. just as in the UK you have to have the correct visa/work permit or residential status to be able to work. There is very little work available with these rights without them then its unrealistic and if you get kicked out for that you wont be going back.. unlikely anyone would employ you without the NI no unless its a bar etc and they rarely pay enough to feed someone

Hi

Thank you for that I was thinking somewhere like Diamonds International or Colombian emeralds and was really just wondering if they had expats employed there as I would presume then they would help with getting a work visa however from what you say it seems that may not be such an easy option

Sorry about that!

You make it look like only the expats would consider helping another expat, almost like doing undercover work for the enemy. There are defined immigration laws and employers, if they are justified in hiring a foreigner, will be happy to go through the necessary paperwork to get you in.

In my experience in this region, only spouses of work permit holders have, in special circumstances, been allowed to work in retail where there were staff shortages.

In Barbados, if there are no bajan nationals available then they can always recruit from elsewhere in Caricom and therefore it is highly unlikely that as an outsider you could ever get a work permit even at Colombian...... or Diamonds. It is not specialised work unless you are a watchmaker in fine jewellery or a fine jewellery maker.
