Starting Afresh In Barbados

Hi there

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I will be relocating to Barbados from London in February next year to spend some time with my elderly parents in Christ Church and was wondering where the best places to go and what the best activities to do are in terms of meeting like-minded people and socialising?

I have only ever been on holiday in Barbados and have no real idea what life is like on a day to day basis for the younger generations there as I have no "local" (Bajan or ex-pat) friends on the island and I am keen to make some.

I hope to hear from you, thanks!

Well how long are you going to be down there for? Relocating long term or short term?

Hi MerkzBlue

It all depends on how things go really. I will be there for 4-5 months initially and if that goes well, I will be moving there permanently.

Thanks

Well i'm going down there in June, I know there is always something to do in St Lawrence Gap, every night, your bound to meet people there! During the day i think is just relaxation in Barbados, nothing really goes on, citizens go to work and tourists go to the beach or other attractions!

If you are so inclined I can recommend the Hash House Harriers. It's a drinking club with a running problem.

We are a mixed group of ex-pats and Bajan locals who meet once a week on a Saturday afternoon and go for a run/walk following a trail laid by one of our cohorts - then the lime goes on and on!!!

You can find out more at: http://www.barbadoshash.com/

I could also suggest the pub quiz at the Barbados Cruising Club on a Wednesday evening. There are a number of quizzes around the island but am sure the one at BCC is by far the best.....:) There is a good bunch of people and it often gets a bit noisy lol

Thanks very much Ian.

I have been here just over a month now and I am beginning to settle so I may well come along to one of the next Hash runs (although I am pretty sure that I will be walking rather than running)! :D

Walking or running I am sure you will enjoy it a lot... I am going off the island for a while but I know you will find many others to make you feel that you fit right in.

Hi to all,
I'm new to this forum.
Very excited to be leaving London life behind and relocating to beautiful Barbados!
My parents were born in Barbados and still reside in London.
I first visited Barbados at the age of 11 and promised myself then that one day I will make you my home, so here I am.
With bags packed (almost!), my husband, 2 children and I plan the big move for early Sept 2012.
Everything sorted except the social life. LOL
Would love to hear from you

Welcome to the forum LGW I remember the brilliant vibes when planning the whole new life .. welcome to the site and stay in touch .. maybe you can be a bit more specific about what type of social life you would like to make to ensure some responses on here

Your story sounds exactly the same as mine LGWBGI...all except the bit where you are relocating this year - I'm so jealous! I have Bajan parents and have citizenship myself and I hope to relocate within the next couple of years with my husband and our two children. Trying to get my head around the details - I have a job and am a remote worker so all I'd need is broadband plus I do remote contracting for another company so workwise I'm fine, it's just the house situation i.e we don't have one! Not sure whether to buy or head down the renting route. Any opinions?

Cheers :)

Hi,

Sounds like exciting times for both LGWBGI and BritishBajanGal!
It would be great to hear how you are settling in BBG and if there are are any things that were different to what you were expecting? Any do's or dont's..?

Hi there everyone and particularly LGWBGI and BritishBajanGal. I've gathered by perusing that private messaging is frowned on!. Really would like to here how you both are getting on as I am in similar position. A British born Bajan who is considering relocating but is it really that much of a minefield.? God Bless

Hi there Brit What makes you think Private Messaging is frowned upon?

Re: Starting Afresh In Barbados

Well maybe 'frowned on' was the wrong term but from postings on the forum the majority would like the replies shared. Greetings to you Dips!

Well we almost relocated to sunny Barbados!
Actually I went back to work (long story) and will try again for Sept 2013.
Rented out our brand new home out there...ouch!
I'm really hoping everything will come together for the start of the next academic year.
:)
