Leaving uk debt behind
Does anyone know if U.K. Debt collectors chase people who have moved to Barbados?

and there will be a shed load of interest, and possibly CCJs added, most of the people you owe to would be happy if you contacted them, and offered to pay something each month, and, of course, ask for the interest to be frozen.

Yes - is the plain simple answer. They chase people every where ....... imagine sitting at your crusty old desk in the UK - every day is the same and it is raining and cold outside and then your boss says: ".... hey a debtor has fled to Barbados does anyone wanna go after him?" Er - what do you think the answer is? Pay by instalments and get some sleep at night!

If you have no assets (or very few), just declare yourself bankrupt at the County Court before you leave the UK.

Ouch! Bad advice - this us UK not USA! You cannot leave UK Udebt behind like you can in the USA or Aus for that matter. UK Zis signed up yo the Global Warrant Debt Treaty ...... simply no escape!!

Agreed - but this is only in the UK. If the debtor moves abroad the debt follows the debtor as the UK has no debt treaty outside the EU or Commonwealth. It's all on the Web.

I've never heard of "Global Warrant Debt Treaty" and I highly doubt you'd get chased. The debt will be wiped eventually if not acknowledged.

I have a relative who sold his 5 houses in london and skipped to Grenada without paying any taxes (5 mil approx.)
The uk tax mans response was hilarious. They couldnt extradite him, so they sent letters for years, all of which he kept. They started out very aggressively, pay up or face jail and pay interest etc. but over the years they softened, and started offering discounts if he could see his way to clear his debt so he could live out his years in peace and visit his grandkids in the uk. There was an element of realism, pay something and at least you wont get arrested when you visit miami, (he has multiple names, no chance.) Its now down from over 2 mil to 250k but as he said, he can build yet another house for his grandkids on that...
