Info needed please....Barbados
I'm a mother of a young toddler (1yr old)and am currently based in the UK.
I'm self employed Recruitment specialist / Career development consultant. I lead a good life here in the UK but nursery costs, high mortgage, increasing energy bills etc means that I'm incresasingly comprmising my quality of life.
I'm thinking about moving to Barbados. Can anyone give me some advise on Chilcare services available on the island and how much it normally cost. ( It probably doesnt cost £900!!!!
Also where is the best place to live on the island. Not to expensive but reasonable. How much can i expect to pay for a 2bedroom apartment.
Any info will be greatfully received
Thanks in advance

Hi Dionne:
I guess you could find someone to look after your child for as little as Bds$400 a week. But do not expect any real qualifications at that price, just a good, honest, hardworking person.
There are nice neighbourhoods to live all over the island, and a number of gated developments if you are worried about security.
You could find a nice 2 bedroom apartment for about Bds$1500 a month to as much as $4000 a month in a gated community such as Margate Gardens or Millenium heights, and up to $6000 a month in the swankier developments such as Sugar Hill.
Have you been to Barbados before? You will need to consider your immigration status for even if you are earning money outside of Barbados, you will only be allowed to stay for six months at a time before needing to renew your visa.

Hi John,
Thanks so much for your reply...very helpful indeed.
I will be going to Barbados next month to have a good look around the island. The areas that you mentioned are they close to Bridgetown?
Do you know of any nurseries in the area?
If I wanted to carry on working freelance in the island what do you recommend immigration wise?
Thanks in advance

Hi Dionne:
I created a google map of Barbados with some places of interest on it. This will halp you to get your bearings.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...9a5327ff6ee3d6
I think as long as you are not earning any money from clients in Barbados, you should be fine immigration wise. If you are going to be earning money from outside of Barbados, you could set up an offshore corporation and pay much less tax on your money (I think it is 2.5%). You will need to get professional advice about this. If you are going after clients in Barbados, you will need a work permit, which is not easy to get.
A friend of mine has a Montessori school. Although your child is too young, she may be able to reccomend a good nursery school for you. Her name is Angelique Bjerkhamn and her e-mail address is [email protected]. Just tell her I gave you her name.
Hope you find the map helpful. If you want, I can add other places of interest based on what you are looking for.
Regards

Re: Info needed please....Barbados
Thanks for the helful info....
I will be after Clients in Barbados so i guess I'll need to look into the Immagration status to get started.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to answer this question but do you now if in Barbados they have Career Coaches? The role of a Career Coach is simply to develop an individuals potential so enabling them to progress within their organsiation.
Thanks
Dionne

They may not call them Career Coaches here, but there are several people who do this type of thing in Barbados. Unless you have tons of money, you would likely need to get someone to sponser you through a work permit to be able to work with clients in Barbados. I say tons of money as for examble they guy who needed a permit, or permission to stay on the island who opened a restaurant. Had enough money to say.. "I can support myself without living off the govt and he did that" (later skipped town without paying about bbd20,000.00 that he owed people, but.. oh well)
I've also understood that immigration is "going by the book" these days on issuing work permits, so that might not be the answer either.
I would suggets trying contact someone in Immigration before you head this way.
