Further Education

Hi everyone.

Is it the same system in Barbados as in the UK where a child would finish Secondary school, then go to a college to do their 'A' Levels before going to University (if that's what they want to do)? If yes, where are the best colleges on the island?

Thanks,

L

HI Lyndi... Barbados has 5th form (CSEC - O Level) and 6th form (CAPE - A Level). Secondary school go from 1st to 5th form. There are only a few of those school that then to a 6th Form - Queens, Harrison, Combermere, The Lodge School, St. Micheal's and I think Foundation (the last 2 are new this year and only offer certain subjects for CAPE at this point).

The Barbados Community College also offers CAPE Classes as well as other things if a child leaves a secondary school and does not want to do 6th form/CAPE Studies.

All children must apply, after 5th form, to the 6th form school they wish to go to, even if they are already attending there (so if at Queens through 5th form, they still have to make the grade and apply to Queens for 6th form).

I wouldn't say that any are better.. but I guess you would say that Harrison and Queens get the Lion share of the Barbados Government Scholarships and Exhibitions Awards (only available to Barbados Citizens) upon completion of 6th form and CAPE to go to University (either in Barbados or Abroad depending on the award)

Thanks for that Sunnie. Sounds pretty much like the UK.

Would you know if a lot of Bajan kids go on to the UWI? I have had a quick look on their website and it looks ok.

Lyndi a lot of bajan kids do go on to UWI as the first degree is subsidised by government for bajan students. Other Caribbean students also attend as well as some international students.
