Dual Citizenship

Hi Guys.

I've trawled the net but am unable to come to a definitive answer,so I'll post here as I'm sure this is quite a common scenario for the good folks here on Expats.

Can anyone explain the pros & cons of having two passports(British & Bajan) and how best to use them.

What I mean is,as a British Citizen do I have to have a British passport to travel?

When my British passport expires can I just come and go on the Bajan one which expires later?

What would happen when re-entering the UK on the Bajan one as a British citizen & resident ?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks in advance Guys.

Hi Guapa
I happen to be a UK immigration lawyer. You are lucky to have dual nationality. It gives you full right to reside and work in both countries, and many rights to benefits of each such as NHS, eduction, welfare etc.
In terms of travel, I would always carry both. When entering a country use the passport of that country. Not sure about Barbadian law (but desperate to learn if anyone can help!), but if you enter uk with only a Barbadian passport, you will be treated as a Bajan visitor (in effect a foreigner)and given a maximum 6 month visa until you prove otherwise. Visitors have no rights at all in uk! British citizenship and passport will give you free access to europe too.

I would say always try to keep both passports up to date - gives you so many choices and options in both countries.

Im not sure how Barbadian citizens are treated by countries other than uk, but sure someone on here can help.

I'll look forward to hearing what others have to say
