Desperate Housewives??

Hi All,

Delighted to find this forum!

I am on the verge of being offered a job with an international organisation in Barbados. Although it's clear Barbados is a holiday paradise, I know from previous expat postings that holiday fun does not necessarily mean it's a great place to live permanently - especially for non-working spouses.

Can somebody give me a heads-up on how non working other halves (female) pass the time, and if there are any clubs etc or other networks she might join to get to meet people.

I know there is a big Hash in Barbados. Is there any am-dram, choirs or similar 'cultural' stuff?

Many thanks in anticipation

There are the Women's Clubs - Canadian, British and American - I think they're all still running, and they host various events.

I think there is probably a social circle with moms of school-aged children as well. Hopefully one of the moms will chime in and talk more about that.

It's an opportunity to take up a long-lost hobby, as well: photography, art, whatever you like.

I know there are lots of people on this forum who have ideas, so they'll be a big help also.

Good luck,
Fox

Hi Fox,

Many thanks for your reply. Looking back, I see there are other threads in a similar vein!

Hello again,

You mentioned drama and choirs and it made me think of NIFCA. Check their website to see if there is a way to get involved there, too. http://ncf.bb/

You already know about the Hash, but there is also the National Trust Hikes. Sometimes the information on the website is not quite accurate (scheduling) so it's best to contact them directly. http://nationaltrustbarbados.com/HikingCalendar.aspx

Not sure if you're into sailing, but the Barbados Cruising Club has recently been revived, and is becoming quite a hot spot. Check their website. http://www.barbadoscruisingclub.org/

Best of luck! It's definitely important for non-working folks to find something to do (actually, those of us working as well!) because even though it can seem like a tropical paradise, it's easy to get bored after a while.
