Is it all sunshine and smiles?
Hi, my name is simon and I've got the opportunity to work in Barbados for a year(wow!). But my wife,Hannah and I have a few concerns. Mainly how would island life effect our children.(Aidan 7,Callum 5 and Emily 8 months). How are the schools and climate? will the children suffer. I'll be working in the construction industry, does this operate in the same way as in europe. Will Hannah be able to make friends and socialise with Emily? I've got a hundred questions but that will do for now! Thanks.

hi simon
you have come to the right site. there are many 'BE friends' who can give you advice. mine would be read all these threads-they contain so much helpful information- and visit BB. not aware of anyone that has been bothered by the climate!! at the end of the day your time in BB will be as good as what you make it. good luck with the work opportunity!

Hi Simon & Hannah,
you lucky one, you already got a job there! My advice: take this as a really great possibility to learn to know a very nice and beautiful country with friendly people. If you go there and be open and tolerant, talk to the local people with a smile, then you will find your way there and probably don´t want to go back after that year Of course there are also problems, it is not all sunshine and smiles, but comparing to my home country for example, it is sort of paradise, and especially the climate, the mentality and the people. But it of course depends on what type of person you are, if you love to travel and be in foreign countries, you will love this tiny island. Don´t worry too much, and it is just a year, if you don´t like it, you at least got the opportunity to learn to know how it is to live in another country. And for the kids it is also a very good thing to see another "world"!

If you want to look for flaws, you'll find them!
If you see this as a life experience for you and your family then enjoy it!!!! Such an oppertunity might never cross your path again!!!
But maybe I'm not the right person to give an objective advise because I LUUUUUUUUVe Barbados!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss it, miss it ,miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry

I agree...go there and do things differently, you will meet so many nice people-- just keep an open mind and stay cool and you will have fun. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, the Bajans always love to talk (alot) but you will learn. Buy a good road map and just start driving around. My best advice to you is to not eat too much macaroni pie, fishcakes or coucou-- take it easy!

as I sit here happily munching on my beef Roti ... yum! ... you will have a blast! the kids will fit in very quick, family life in Barbados is very easy, lots of schools, lots of mums and kids, lots of clubs for them etc etc. My kids live th most amazing life here in the WI.
Barbados is really a very busy island so be sure your time will be filled especially with having the kids.
the downsides .... traffic is a nightmare, it can be expensive depending on what you do, and I personally find it very touristy (one reason we're on another island close by instead) - but for most people they love it. Never hear anyone having hated living there and life in the Caribbean is WONDERFUL!! welcome
