I can only assume that their piggy bank cannot take another cent!
We have exactly the same - although we do have a written contract and regular invoices/receipts for our DD payments.

Thank you for the replies, I will post when I hear from Priinet. At the moment I have had 3 emails saying I cannot cancel or revert to €7. I have found the contract I signed and although my email stipulated the 6/6 arrangement we left if at €25 per month for 18 months. The contract does not state anything about the 6/6 , nor the length/term of the contract, how to withdraw/ what notice to give so I am hoping they will answer these questions.

Keith, the suggestion to hook up with neighbours makes a lot of sense and I think that I will probably cancel Priinet if they do not respond soon, stop the DD and, when Covid19 restrictions are lifted ( IF/WHEN) and we can return I will have that conversation with our neighbours.

In practical terms it's not a good idea to share with your neighbours. For example, the strength of you wifi may not be sufficient - we tried to access our wifi when directly next door and the signal was quite weak. Although we can see the SSID of some neighbours the signal strength is poor. You would have to share the priinet password with your neighbours - not sure if priinet would agree to that. Your neighbours would have access to your LAN and all the data on it. You would have no control over use and you could find that they are using all your bandwidth for video stream (or even illegal porn!) . You couldn't set parental controls to restrict inappropriate access by kids. You would need a watertight contract between neighbours to ensure everyone pays and plays fair. I don't think priinet could split the downlink from your aerial box so you could each have your own router - I don't think it works like that and why would they agree if they could sell a contract direct to the neighbours if they really wanted broadband. I think the cons outweigh the benefits but that's just my opinion.

I take your point. I don't know much about the way in which internet works and can't say I understand the security of it. I retired from BT as a switch planning engineer long before broadband and wifi so I have not a clue of how it all works. Perhaps a share with just an immediate neighbour, who also spends as little time as us there is a more sensible opportunity. We only watch tv/ stream on dark winter nights if there's nothing worth watching on our incredibly clear bbc satellite system. Otherwise we only use the net for emails/ surfing and video calls back home. ie minimal bandwidth. Normally, I am happy to pay 180 euros a year to priinet for the convenience, but the current situation is just a waste of money.

Thanks for your input Mike - good points that hadn't entered my mind.

Priinet have replied and confirmed that our contract is cancelled, they will take Oct DD but no others. They want to collect equipment so that's a pain but understandable. I have asked if they can leave it in the house until I renew - whenever that may be. It would only be the router I think. Will see what they say.

Default Re: PRIINET OPTIONS due to Covid 19

I remember when we took out our Priinet contract, I was very specific in my request and emailed them in advance, of my requirements. Especially for the shut off option. Which was a major benefit for us and still unbeaten by other companies. I had to make sure that we got that. I also was bemused about the charge going from 7 to 7.01 to 7 euros again.

This year we will have used 10 months at €7 and 2 months at €25 = €120. Not so bad.... Considering....

BTW Brussels is now in the same league as Paris and Madrid, with the worst stats in Europe. Brussels hospitals are full, needing people to 'check in' in outlying areas now. Until very recently we were banned in going to Spain. We can now, but must quarantine on return. However both sides of the border in our area around CE are better than here in Brussels. But after last time when flights were grounded and we were locked down, we are nervous about a repeat if we came.. being ill in a Huelva hospital when we arent native speakers is also a major concern, especially if we couldn't see each other. We'd feel even more isolated!!

All Brussels bars close tomorrow for a month, thank goodness restos are still open!! Though resto closure may be the impetus we need to come.

Jon

Personally I wouldn't share with anyone. Once you have invited someone inside your firewall then it doesn't take a lot of knowledge to hack into your devices. As we take PCs and tablets with lots of personal data including bank details etc with us, I wouldn't want to risk it.

I know someone who is sharing their fibre with 3 other apartments, each with their own router. He does know what he is doing

I have a separate router running in line with my Orange fibre router. I have a DNS setup on the 2nd router in order to watch UK TV.

Some blocks in Vista Esuri have a communal wifi which any owners can access

I was talking specifically about the priinet broadband option, which is a point-to-point WiMax broadband. In order to have separate routers you would need some kind of splitter on the downlink from the WiMax receiver, which I don't think is technically possible and I would certainly think would be commercially impossible. I'm sure if one wanted to bilk priinet by sharing the passcode one could but there would be security implications.
(in fact I too have an in-line router so I can set up a VPN as priinet do not allow access to their router for obvious reasons)

Hi Mike
Am I right in guessing that you have a second wifi router connected via an Ethernet cable to one of the ports of the priinet router. Its on this 2nd router that you install VPN and connect your devices to, please?

If so, is that better than having the VPN on the device and then connecting directly to the priinet router, please?

Finally, if you unplug the priinet router and replace it with another router with VPN on it, would that also work, please? I suppose that would violate the service agreement also.

As you know, I'm not a 'tecchie', so these maybe silly questions, but you've helped us many times before in setting up IT at home, mi-fi etc. I still have a router you recommended in pre-priinet days!!

Security is important to me, as I was hacked (or my Priinet router was) in CE some years ago. The Priinet engineers had to do some 'jiggery-pokery' to fix this problem resulting in a new router name and a much stronger password. It took them a while, and I cant remember if they changed the router or reprogrammed the old one (if that's possible).

Thanks in advance and I hope 'you and yours' are well and safe.

This dinosaur will now go back to his cave, and try and learn how to programme the darned VHS video-recorder

I can't get tapes for my betamax anymore so I'm thinking of upgrading to VHS 🤣

I took another router, exactly the same model as the priinet router, to do as you suggest - substitute mine so I had control and could set up a VPN. I thought about it and realised that wasn't a good idea since priinet needed access to the router for maintenance/reset etc quite apart from the contract implications. Before that I had tried a free DNS setting in my smart telly and that worked until it was blocked. The advantage of an in-line router is that you can set up your own private LAN with it's own SSID and password and give permission to all your devices to share the VPN that you set up in this router.
To be honest I haven't got round to setting up another VPN - I was very interested in your NordVPN contract. Currently I have the telly plugged into the ethernet and use Filmon for TV. Shame we can't be there to try out some more configurations. Still we have had a bathroom remodelled in our absence but we haven't seen the results yet 😫. We had a staycation in Shetland and Orkney instead.

We are both fit and well although I am scheduled for more chemo around Christmas - so we have something to look forward to! 🤢🤮

Hiya all,
As promised I am letting you have the update. Priinet were very good, answered my emails quickly. I have cancelled the contract - no problems. They do want to collect their equipment and I am lucky to have a friend there who will meet Priinet at the house so all sorted.

See below for the message they sent regarding a new contract :-

FROM PRIINET :-
When you are in Spain again. Please, contact with us to make a new optic fiber installation because it is already available in the area.
The installation is free with 12 month of permanency.
We hace three different rates depending on the speed:
-100Mb per 24'20€
-200Mb per 25'90€
-300Mb per 29'90€

The Priinet router at your end is password protected because they don't want someone logging in as admin and messing up the config, possibly leading to the service going down and them getting a callout to sort it out. You can't substitute the Priinet router with your own. The router in your home has to be configured to network with a multiport router at Priinet's site and they will not give you the info to set up the router at your end.

You can't split a broadband connection whether it's WiMax, ADSL, ADSL2+, fibre etc delivered - the connection is 'simply' a link between a router at your end and one at the provider's end. The main problem with WiMax is heavy rain degrading the signal, sometimes to an unusable level.

What you can do is connect devices, using the router's WiFi capability (eg to a mobile phone, Fire TV Stick, tablet, laptop) as most of us do, or via an Ethernet switch port on the router (eg to another router.

Perhaps the simplest way to run a VPN is on the end device (mobile phone, Fire TV Stick, tablet, laptop). I use NordVPN which gives me 5 simultaneous connections - I have it loaded on 10 devices but can run the VPN on 5 at any one time (Surfshark VPN allows unlimited simultaneous connections). If you are out and about and want to use free WiFi you can run your VPN and be confident that no-one is snooping your connection, eg you want to do access your bank account.

Regards

Thanks for the feedback Mike and Fred.

Ive had NordVpn for a couple of years. We've never needed more than the 5 connections on our devices. However knowing that you can load it on a 2nd router which you 'daisy chain' via an ethernet cable to a port on the priinet router, made me wonder if this was best. Perhaps doubling up on the security by having it on the 2nd router and the devices. Of course this gives the secondary benefit that any guests also have this protection as I think the 5 connections limit is not applied, or the router (and anything connected to it) counts as 1 of the 5.

As I say 'Jonny no-mates' hasn't needed more than the 5 in practice Probably because we haven't had many guests!!

Thanks again

Jon
