Zippidy do da!!! I got it!!!

OK, we're only talking about my NZ driving licence. But hey! - let's celebrate success.

I got 35/35 - what a cool performance I think you'll agree and I join Ian and Paula in Christchurch amongst the hallowed ranks of the perfect score. My test took about 2 minutes to complete - I was slowed down by the need to scratch off the answer each time.

Seriously, anyone who bothers to read the NZ road code will pass the theory test and you only need to get 32/35 anyway. So don't worry, any prospective testees - just read the code and she'll be right.

downunderpom Jan 12th 2004 8:18 am

Well done, Don. :D

Of course, in NSW we have 45 questions... maybe we should have a 'perfect score' table? And yes, I got 45/45. My wife says I'm a smart-arse! :D

Pollster Jan 12th 2004 8:18 am

Now all you have to do is work out this give way from the right rule which is blimmin confusing!!

When I was driving in NZ I just adopted my 'driving in London' technique which is go when you want, where you want and gesture angrily at anyone who gets in your way!!!;)

Well done on getting it - life's little triumphs and all that.

Gingacaz Jan 12th 2004 8:22 am

So it was Pollster who cut me up....and I was blaming the Kiwis!!!

Well done Don - for the speedy scratching AND the test!

What an exciting day it must have been for you!! HA HA - Congratulations!

How are the little PF's doing in the bright lights of Dunedin? Have you been up to Larnacks Castle yet? (Propably spelt that wrong, sorry)

Yeah I got in free (Larnach) because I blagged my way in saying we wanted to check out the Stables motel units (cheap good accomodation if anyone is interested). Nice garden + view.

Kids love it here, my just-3 year old is just starting to ride his bike and the other one is walking about like a pro now (started at 11 months).

Mr Old Fart Smart-arse SIR! I agree with her :p ;)

BTW congrats on the D/L Don :)

Olive101 Jan 12th 2004 8:45 am

Congratulations!

I am (apparently) the only person ever to fail the South Australia driving test. Fortunately I was just practising online in the UK - but I think I had better start swotting now!

(Clever husband got full marks). Grrr. :(

It really is a joke that it is called a Castle, it is more like a small Statley Home FRom what I remember from visiting it as a child.

Not exactly, I will give you a feel for the test.

1. (Picture of car with left indicator flashing.) Question: which way does the car want to go: left/ right/ straight ahead/ backwards?

2. (Picture of 'Speed limit 100' sign.) Question: what does this sign mean: Speed limit 100/ speed limit 100 except when overtaking/ you must always drive at 100kmph/ etc

3. (Picture or roundabout with Give Way signs, blue car waiting to enter rdt, red car waiting to enter rdt at next entry point to rdt). Question: who has priority?

You get the gist...

WHAT am I saying??!!!!

Don Jan 12th 2004 8:52 am

OK - let me tell you about the horror of another driving test I had to endure all those years ago. Place: a small and very horrible middle eastern country where I was working.

Test started at 4 am (yes, that's 4 hours after midnight and pitch black - it was Ramadan), an Arab mate from work picked me up, good fellow. Practical/ in the testing pound: 1) Reverse hill start, 2) Reverse obstacle course, 3) Reverse parking into a very tight spot. Road: drive for 10 minutes with 3 other testees sitting in the back, you all get to switch places every 10 minutes.

All that reversing was terrible but I passed!

And all because the Chief of Police got busted for cruising for hookers in London. Until then it was automatic for UK licence holders.

Tut, tut...these antipodeans.
It's enough to leave one with a terrible empty feeling in one's skull.

So pressure is on you other NZers to join the ranks!

Nicola :)

Congrats Don on your perfect score.
Glad to see things are going well for you, Mrs Don and the little Dons. We have just waved off 5 house guests that stayed for 4 weeks over xmas. Its great to see people but its also nice to get our house back!

Paula

Don Jan 13th 2004 9:25 am

Hiya Paula.

House guests - the human equivalent of benign parasites or is it symbiosis in action?!! Love'em, really, but 4 weeks sounds a bit long!

We've got loads coming over to our place in the sun (back in Europe) this Euro summer, so I am already preparing myself mentally.

Anyway, so we are the Perfect Score Famous 5 - Paula + Ian (Watt Dabney), Nicola + Mr Akaubear, Don. (Mrs Don is too scared to take the test right now, sad to report.)

Any more straight As out there?

southerner Jan 18th 2004 7:21 pm

Don

Well done.

Was there a question on whether sitting in the back boot of a Toyota 4x4 is allowed? ;)

Anyway, why do you need a licence, you spend all your time driving on the beach.

Cheers,

Southerner

ps Mrs S is still on for that Cadburys tour if Mrs P is keen.

Why do you think the driving standards are so crap! The accident rates say it all really.

Don Jan 19th 2004 12:23 pm

Hiya, the Big S. Glad you're back!

Anyone doubting why Southerner is Southerner, have a look at his song:

Southern Man Song

Some of the boys
got it into their heads
'Bout movin' up north
To Follow the bread
That aint for me
That kind of thing just don't rate
This is one southern boy
Who ain't crossin' the strait

Now I might not be rich
But I like things' down here
We got the best looking girls
And the best damn deer
So you can keep your Queen City
With your cocktails and cool
Give me a beer in a seven
With the boys shooting pool

Chorus
I'm a southern man
Well I'm southern bred
I got the south in my blood
And I'll be here 'till I'm damn well dead

'Cos here we just know
What makes a southern boy tick
And it ain't Margaritas
With some fruit on a stick
Well it might not be fancy
But when you come from down here
You know you got the best girl
And you got the best beer

Hmmm, not too sure myself about letting 15 year olds behind the wheel...

You know that's one of our worries... Maybe we'll move back to the UK when our son is 14 and 11 months, and come back when he's 17!! ;)
