Extremely well said Ipom, that's being printed and framed for the wall as I type!

OK, is it fair to say that in the "UK" you get 10 months of shitty weather and 2 months of decent weather wheras in Oz it's the other way round?

With kids in tow, it makes all the difference as to what the weather is like and therfore dictates the quality & enjoyment of the day.

Well, where I am, this month will be the coldest and prob wettest...and after that, it's all uphill... so Sept, Oct,Nov, Dec, Jan (the hottest month), Feb, March, April, May all good.... June is cooling but with sunny days, July wetter with cooler weather but still sunny, and then August is chilly/windy/wet but still with drying days (I dry all our clothes outside usually, unless it's chucking it down, but it's usually only like that for a couple of days)... so yes, it's similar. I live in a 'disected plateau' (not a mountain, that's a lie ;) ) so the weather up here is much cooler than Sydney weather and lower mountains. We also get much more wind up here too, but it's usually at night.
I live in the second windiest place in Australia. :D

But the UK, well summer's ok, but Autumn is my fav, through to late October, then those lovely days in November which are clear blue skies but cold... Dec, Jan, Feb, absolutely dire. March, bad this year but can be nice... April, spring,.... fingers crossed for good weather.

Australia's much more consistent in my opinion. :)

Want to use the work excuse? Fact is... the average working week in australia is 4 to 5 hours longer than the average working week in the UK. As a generalisation, employers in Aus expect more of you than in the UK.

My life in general is the same as it was in the UK. I still go fishing (although here i have a boat... but i the same light... here i dont have as much time to use it), i still play cricket and tennis... still go camping and rock climbing. The big change for myself is that i am now self employed as opposed to being a paid worker, which means i now have far less spare time. The other thing which has changed is that i now live in a rural environment, which is quieter, less congested etc etc. Disadvantage is that fruit and veg are more seasonal, stuff is normally a little more expensive and i have far less choice in well... everything than what i was used to in the UK.

Lifestyle as a rule shouldnt change much when you move from the UK to Aus. If it does (and its not influenced by retiring, working less etc) then you weren't living your UK life to its full potential.

The UK is a great place to live, as is Australia. Just dont expect too many differences between the two :p

An extremely sensible post. It really depends how much you make of life. Emigration can spur a change in attitude, which is little or nothin gto do wiyth the country, and a lot or everything to do with the process of change.

When you try that with little children, it's hard to watch them cry with the cold no matter how much they're padded up.

It's also hard on a busy village street in the UK where cars go through at 60 in a 30 zone to let your children wobble down incredibly thin pavements. Here, our garden is big enough to ride a bike on and traffic is so infrequent, they can ride down the street or on the fire trails.

Australia's environment makes a huge difference to a child's outdoor life.

I adored the lake district as a child. We'd go there every fortnight in all weather. If it was wet (minority of time really), we all got wet, dog 'n'all, spashed in streams and drank hot tea.

Being completely honest, I found the it easier for hiking in the UK than in Aus, over a 12 month period, because the heat just does me in - good for relaxing and doing nothing, but for me not good for hiking/bushwalking/tramping...which I love.

There is some truth in that Aus and UK are good at different things for different people - it is up to the individual to seize life and take adavnatge of what each country offers in terms of leisure pursuits. But broadly you can do similar things in both.

Yes I agree - I will wash up, shop, clean, school run etc

But on the weather front I totally disagree ... when your lively hood, job, lifestyle is dependent on what the weather does there is nothing more important.

We are a farming family and therefore harvest struggles if its raining.

In the UK it is not uncommon for my husband to work from 6am to 2am the following morning just to try and get as much crop off the field and into store before the weather breaks the following day. If the crop stays on the field its standard lowers and so does the price.

In Australia they have approx 10 months of the year they can harvest AND plant - in the UK we do the same in just 4 weeks.

Can you see my point?

Hi

I have been in Perth with my husband since 1999 after I sponsored him on a prospective marriage visa. We had both met in Oz and have travelled extensively around it. Well my life here in particular has changed completely mostly as we now have children so instead of my day being centred around work, I now work in the evening and spend all day looking after our children. I absolutely love our life here. We have a nice large house and we've made loads of friends, more than we had in the UK. Life is a struggle the same as anywhere with bills and problems etc but our lifestyle is wonderful. We have much more opportunity to spend time outdoors in the sun here and do things which don't cost a lot of money. Life here is definitely more laidback and after the hussle and busstle of London, its an absolute godsend. We love it and now my family is emigrating too!!

Re: Your Typical Day in Oz compared to UK

Life has not really changed Monday to Friday I still get up at 6.15 hit the road to work at 7.15 drop off the other half and a friend of ours in the City and then head to the office to start at 8.30. Finish work at 17.30 and get the gym at around 18.15 for an hour. Get home around 19.15 and make dinner have a chat with the other half and maybe watch a little TV before hitting the bed in true QLD fashion at 21.00 (although I did stay up until 23.00 last night....REBEL! :D ). The only difference between the UK and Aus was I occasionally hit the pub with the boys in the evening something which rarely seems to happen in Aus. The weekend is slightly different as the whole focus in the UK was following Forest both home and away or hitting the horse racing with the lads (which were great times). Now in Aus there is little to replace this and this is still the time when I struggle.

So overall not much has changed other than loosing my usual weekend.
