Well what can i say, could i ask, how would you describe the difference between living in the Redlands Bay area (Queensland), and Cairns? Its just both areas look very appealing, both very nice, but if i were to ask what would you say to describe the differences in lifestyle, things to do, cost of living (Housing costs/Rental Costs) etc, in a few paraghraphs, what would you write?

I notice more expats seem to favour in Queensland the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast area's, rather than Cairns, why can i ask, i have never been to Australia, so know absolutely nothing, so any experts who are living in Queensland please help me out?

There are less jobs in Cairns that pay less well. It is basically a holiday town. Depending on your job this may not matter to you.

Weather is tropical (as opposed to sub tropical in SE Queensland) so more summer rain, more storms, inability to go in the sea for 6 months due to marine stingers.

Weather is a big difference, and I would say the proximity to other major centers would be as well.

In Brisbane it's a short plane ride to Sydney and not to bad to Melbourne I think. It'd be a much longer trip to try and get anywhere from Cairns. An hours drive around Brisbane would lead you to lots of activities and places to see (themeparks, etc).

Thanks for the replies, the location does attract me to Cairns. The one thing that i have noticed is Cairns seems to becoming a more popular location for expats now, whereas a few years back Perth was the choice, then Brisbane, but it seems Adelaide and Cairns are now becoming a viable option for many.

Anybody living in Cairns at the moment - What is the local economy like with regards to employment vacancies across the board? As the local Cairns economy increases in size, due to migrants, are there jobs being created, and are these positions being filled?

Do a quick search for Cairns posts by Bix. He's gone into huge detail in the not so distant past about suburbs, employment, housing etc. Very informative. Did I just say Bix was informative I need a drink
