Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

It's about 1/2 of the price of any other when I want to fly from Manchester to Adelaide. What do you all think considering recent events? I've never flown with them before.

Of course. In fact I did, in August last year.

Was looking at their flights earlier. Would not be in the slightest concerned about crashing.

Sorry to hijack, but BCW do you know if Malaysian make many seats available in business from KUL to SYD? I couldn't find any looking on BA but I only had quick look.

Without hesitation. In fact I recently flew them SYD > KL > BKK and back over Christmas. I have always rated them as a pretty decent airline, and stop overs in KL are pretty agreeable too. Planes were new, in good condition and the catering is pretty good as well.

They have had a run of bad luck - neither event (in my opinion) could have been reasonably predicted.

Thanks for your replies, if it were me I would probably book them no problem, but it is the wife and kids coming back to me. I'm nervous when they do it alone as it is and this just amplifies it somewhat to me!

I had this problem with my GF and our trip to Thailand over Christmas. She flatly refused to fly Malaysian, and insisted on Qantas. So I flew Malaysian on my own and saved nearly $600 on the cost of the ticket compered to her.

See, I'd only have a problem with an airline if their maintenance looked dodgy (eg something within their control). As such I'd look more questioningly at Qantas (how many bits falling off and failing have they had now?) than at Malaysian (suicidal pilot, russian missile attack).

Yeah, that's pretty much my opinion too. Suicidal pilot and russian missile attack are not generally things that the risk managers can predict.

Are they generally a good airline aside from the two recent tragedies? We normally fly Emirates but the flights are through the roof at the moment for when we want to go. Are they comparable to them?

Neither incidents had to do with maintainence or pilot error to be best our our knowledge. Suicidal seems to be the best explaination for the first. Go nuts. Book away.

Exactly. I'd take Malaysian over Qantas if had a choice and all things being equal. Better flight staff from my experience as well.

Flown with Malaysian several times - would choose them over Qantas every time. They did not handle the PR of missing plane very well, but they are a sound airline who had two incidents that could happen to an airline in quick succession. The chances of a third are tiny.

I'd go as far as advise a stopover in Malaysia en route, great introduction to Asia if a first timer. A country fast, probably too fast reaching developed status.

Great food and people though.

No. Point blank NO!..... Which is stupid really I know. But I'm a nervous flyer to begin with and a little superstitious, which again is probably silly but I would need to feel 100% safe, well 99%, before I stepped on a plane.

Re: Would you fly Malaysian Airlines?

The only rational reason you could have for questioning whether or not you should fly MH is if you're concerned about the long term viability of the airline i.e. will it still be flying my route in x months time. Even then, the airline clearly isn't going to fail, the government will prop it up regardless. If it really is half the price of the alternatives I'd be booking it quick!
