Would I be eligable to move to australia?
Hi
Im 46 years old and I would really like to move to Australia with my son. I am an administrator at a nhs doctors surgery and I have been in the job for the past 15 years. My son is 19 and 8 months ago finished hes third year at college. He studied plumbing first year, plumbing and central heating the second and the third year he completed a gas diploma. So my question is would we be able to obtain a visa? Also we want to move out there as my son has tried for 3 years to get an apprenticeship or any free work experience but no one will take him on. He has also had many interviews for shops and fast food restaurants but they keep telling him because he has a diploma he should be applying for higher jobs. So would it be easier for him to start a career out in Australia? If not would he be able to go to college to study something again and get Australian qualifications? Another reason to move out there is because the way the UK economy is going and the credit crunch and as a single parent I have to try and scrape through my monthly wage to pay bills and food. I have distant family out there and they love it. They say you earn more money and living is cheaper. Is this true and is it better financially to live in Australia than the UK?
Thanks
Donna

Hey Donna
There is a fairly strict criteria for obtaining a visa to come to Australia, which requires you to have certain skills that are required here.
Check out the immigration web site to check if you are eligible? http://www.immi.gov.au/
There is a lot of info there and you may discover if you are eligible or not fairly easy.
If you are and you decide to come.... Good luck! :-)
Just on the "you earn more money" comment...... In many case we do, but the cost of living in much greater. Check out the house prices and you'll be shocked. www.realestate.com.au

To answer your questions:
I don't think you would be successful for a visa due to your role and age but check out the skills list and age requirements on the DIAC site here http://www.immi.gov.au/
However with plumbing your son may have a chance depending on certain criteria. He also needs to check out the DIAC site to see if his skills are listed. Be aware he may need to demonstrate experience as well as qualifications so this is something which may take him time to obtain so the visa isn't going to happen overnight.
Due to his age your son may also be deemed independant so effectively he can apply for a visa but can't add you to his application unless you are dependant on him (highly unlikely as you have a job). However you may be able to apply independantly for the contributory parent visa so check out the criteria for this. Be aware that to get this visa it costs a lot of money and you need to have a balance of family which means at least 50% of your kids in Aus as well as overseas. Again this is explained better on the DIAC site.
The other thing that comes to mind is that even if your son does manage to get the visa and come to Aus as a fully qualified Plumber he may have to re-take exams to qualify as an Australian plumber as some states don't recognise the UK qualifications.
Finally about the Aussie economy. You mention things being tough in UK ...well it might surprise you to hear it's tough here as well. You mention we earn more money and things are cheaper but it's not that simple. You need to do a search on here and read what people are saying about the cost of living in Aus and jobs. UK is not the only place feeling the effects of the GFC and Aus whilst a fantastic place to live, is not cheap and jobs are not two a penny. Also if you find yourself out of work here you won't get any financial help for two years so there's no fallback in terms of help.
Anyways that should give you enough to work off. Have you checked out our immigration forum and Plumbing forum too? Maybe do a search on them too as it's a real help to do as much research as possible so you know what you're getting into.
Good luck with it all
