Just looked at Telstra and Optus sites and fed in my future address in Gordon NSW and they both say they can not provide service to the address!!!!

What are my options, anyone? (sensible ones please)

Lightbulb Re: Wot? No broadband!

The private sector has decided you don't need broadband. Therefore, you don't need broadband.

I have had ADSL + 2 for a few months now. Telstra website still shows it as unavailable in my area...my provider's site shows it as available, not surprisingly.

Search on a few other providers, you may find something.

http://www.yourbroadband.com.au/

Then type in the exact address. This will tell you not only if your exchange has free ports but also if the distribution area (DA) has free ports onward to your road.

Quite often, an exchange has ports but the DA doesn't - such as in my streets. Thus you get told you can have broadband but then on further investigation you can't.

It also has a brilliant tool in that it shows you the distance from your house to the mobile telephone co's towers, so you can work out who will give you the better reception and speed.

Basically one of the best tools there is.

A lot of the new estates only have wireless and if you are not close to the towers and the traffic gets heavy the further away you are the first to drop out. My brother is in IT with a telco. They are not allowed to increase the signals due to health reasons

But Telstra is just bringing out an even faster wireless in competition to the $43b NBN...

TELSTRA is embarking on a major upgrade of its mobile network to increase capacity and boost speeds beyond the 100 megabit-per-second mark as it positions itself to capitalise on the explosive growth of mobile broadband.

The telco giant plans to usher in the nation's first commercial release of 4G mobile technology, the LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard, which is capable of peak download speeds as high as 150Mbps, on par with the National Broadband Network.

it's the implication that they are the same type of product in direct competition that is the dodgy bit....no need for facts to get in the way of The Australian (Opposition) and one of its editors campaigns....

Actually they missed the real argument that why are we spending so much to connect rural communities to the NBN at poor cost efficiency when this new technology could bridge the gap between high density and low. With the rural population density being so low, the speeds would be excellent on a 4G at a fraction of the cost, or in fact none to the government.

Oh hang on, three rural plonkers holding the government to ransom. I forget. Silly me.

And it would smack of what was actually being suggested by the Coalition.

Never let common sense come in the way of politics.
