Is it worth shipping the Vacuum Cleaner?
Hi,
Planning to ship my DYSON as part of the furniture shipping.Did anyone have any problems with it when you shipped it.I was told by the movers to clean it well, but still there might be some dust in the pipes..Any thoughts?

Rinse the tubes out if you want. As long as it's as clean as possible, AQIS aren't going to worry about a bit of dust. They're concerned with organic matter. Yes bring it.

We brought ours- wiped out the dust collecting part, cleaned all the hair off the bristles, made sure it smelled of bleach and it passed no problem!

Definitely clean and bring it. They cost $500 to $1000 over here x

And bring some spare parts! Dyson Australia are hopeless at matching up spare parts - my wife needed a new hose, and even though we supplied the serial number they still came back with the wrong one.

Most of your household electrical items will be fine to bring over and I suggest you do so. Older TV's can be problematic but I believe some newer ones might be ok, ours was a 2002 Sony but didn't work over here..well...as a TV, it was a superb games screen!!
Buy loads of UK/Aus adapters for your items....but, apparently the best thing is to actually get them re-plugged, I took that advice and re-plugged pretty much all our UK stuff onto Aus plugs and its been fine.

Yes thats what I meant, the UK to Aus, 3 pin to 2 pin adapters. But I must re-iterate that once you get here do a plug change and replace them all.

Hmpfff....re-wiring plugs is without doubt one of the most tedious parts about emigrating!
Done it once when we went to live in Cape Town (Uk to SA plugs), then again when we went to Sydney (SA to Aus plugs), and again now we're back in the UK!!!!!
Definitely cheaper though than buying dozens of adaptors though which are a rip-off.
Once handy tip is perhaps to bring a few UK four/ six-gang strips or whatever, and just re-wire the main wall end plug on that. Handy for if you have a few UK items that can be grouped together eg TV/DVD/Stereo equipment etc that is usually all grouped in the same place. Rather than re-wire all of them, leave the UK plugs on the applicances and just re-wire the wall end of the multi-socket strip/ block.

I've actually installed UK outlets in my lounge and kitchen. Just swapped them over from the aussie ones. I checked with the local electrician. He said that overseas sockets are now installed in hotels and other places so no reason not to do it at home. I showed him the UK stuff first (MK) and he said it looked better than anything he'd worked with!
P.S. This is in Victoria. I think you can get the death sentence if you even look at a plug / socket in some states.
