Default Worried about Job prospects, any advise

Friend of mine migrated to Oz in march 2005 and tryed for IT job in sydney for a month he is not successful, so he came back.

He say that he applied for 150 job, he heared from less than 10 company / consultants, only one called for a interview. This incident made me worry :scared: as I planned to migrate in June/July this year to Melbourne.

Regards
Prem

Nobody has a god-given right to come over here and expect to find work straight away - especially after just one month!

Some people are lucky and get work straight away, some others find it takes a few months, some take a job and wait for the 'ideal' one to come along.

Can't believe your friend only stayed for one month and turned tail! Where's his British Bulldog spirit?!

I've got some work pretty much straight away but am looking for a better job in a field I'm more comfortable in.

Also, there's far too many IT people in this world! Think you should all retrain as plasterers and get your $250,000 a year wage that way.

Prem

How the hell did he manage that! 150 job applications in 1 month. Even assuming he was applying for jobs every single day, that means 5 job applications a day, every day, for a month!!

What with selection criteria, and tailoring your CV for each job, an application can take over half a day.

Sounds like your friend was a bit of a 'spray and pray' merchant. Did he even check his skills matched the criteria for the job? Or did he just send his CV to 150 companies regardless of their requirements.

Also bear in mind companies, and especially the government are extremely slow at getting back to you, it can take them well over a month to respond to you application. So leaving after 1 month really wasn't giving it a go, he might have 100 job interview invites sitting for him in Australia now.

Check out how much 'in demand' your IT skills are in Melbourne using seek.com.au or careerone.com.au, it'll give you an idea of how many jobs you can apply for when you arrive. It won't be 150 though!

Cheers,
JTL

I agree with you, I told him 1 month is not a reasonable time to expect a good job in IT, but some are lucky to get one.

Took me nearly a year to find a good job..

Good option is to take a temp job in something similar and then when they realise how good you are they'll hire you..(assuming the have the headcount)

His approach was different applied online, based on Advertisement and in person (just walk-in to any IT park and produce his CV for openings, I doubt whether this approach would worked out for any in Australia)

Hmmm, that might work for a trades job. But I can't imagine any IT company worth its salt hiring the first person to walk in off the street? These companies tend to have HR departments who handle recruitment, and advertise the jobs, and create selection criteria and things. They also want a variety of candidates so they can pick the best one.

Once you've applied, and responded to the Selection Criteria, I've heard it can be a good idea to keep bugging them, ringing them, or even visiting them. But I don't think cold calling into company with your CV would work.

And if it did, would you want to work for such an unprofessional company?

Cheers,
JTL

IT has had it. Except in specialist areas and then be prepared for lengthy work droughts.

Surely should have developed most applications to perfection after 65 years of electronic data processing.

IT Wages generally have been dropping for 20 years relative to other fields.

Absolutely!! I'm going to retrain to be a plumber, thats where the money is.

Though you'd think after 2000 years of plumbing they'd have developed it to perfection by now

Cheers,
JTL

P.S. I think you've got too much faith in Surely, he's not that great a developer.

Oh NO! I was jacking the Plumbing in to retrain in IT

Was your friend limited to that short time because of funds?
it does seem a waste of effort applying for visas and having all those checks made just to give it 4 weeks.
