World times - AEDT & UTC

World times - AEDT & UTC
Just been looking at the
abc.net.au website, and noticed the following line:
AEDT = Australian Eastern Standard Time which is 11 hours ahead of UTC (Greenwich Mean Time)
They reckon that UTC stands for Greenwich Mean Time, I always thought it was GMT.
And "Australian Eastern Standard Time" : I thought that was AEST, but they have got AEDT.
OK, so I have nothing better to do at the moment

OK, to settle the issue of UTC, GMT and Zulu
GMT Greenwich Mean Time was the old standard of where the world clock began but for years this pissed off others in europe that happened to be at the same meridian on the globe so it became UTC or universal time co-ordinated. If you drew a line through zero degrees on the meridian youd see what I mean.
The term Zulu (which I used during my flight training), comes from the fact that greenwich is at zero degrees on the meridian and in phonetic alphabet the letter Z is Zulu.

So... just to confuse you EVEN more
In the UK you have:
GMT/UTC - these are constant (never change with the seasons) and are effectively interchangeable. It's also what Britain is on during their winter.
and
BST - British Summer time, which is GMT (or UTC) +1.
In (Sydney) Australia you have:
and AEST (winter) and AEDT (summer) on the east side, except Queensland, who keep AEST same time all year round because they don't have daylight savings as they're nearer the equator.
But I stopped wearing a watch when I came to Australia anyway...
