Working in UK via internet from Oz

Hi all

Has anyone carried on working from Oz whilst having moved from Uk, for the same company, on a short or long term basis.

In a nutshell I am an engineer and a lot of my work can be computer based
design / coordination of building services so wouldnt be impossible.

Mick

Hi Gillian

Hows things with you guys? See you been to another meet, where did that last year go, hope everyone is well and all settled now.

We have had the house on the market since August, just in time to catch the market balancing on the edge of the cliff, ready to go into freefall. Had 3 viewings, no offers, reduced the price once and if it doesnt sell by the end of Jan we are going to rent it out at the end of March and get a 6 month rental to see how things go. Wont be quite the same as we will have no money to bring and will have to knuckle down to work straight away, but if we survive like that then I suppose we know that its for us if you know what I mean.

Havnt posted much up lately as not been feeling enthusiastic due to the above and am still doing the 60 hour weeks to try to get some money, but hey ho all will be good. Expect to land around the 6th of April.

Any jobs or houses you know of?

Speak soon

Mick:)

It must be awful for you - all that waiting. I found the year it took to sell our house far worse than waiting for the visa to be granted ! Perth has plenty of work if your willing to knuckle down - you'll be snapped up with your skills :)
Are you seriously considering staying with your employers and doing it all via the internet ? I'm sure it could be workable.
Met up with Gina and her partner at the last 2 meets - they seem to be settling.
If you need any help re. housing or anything contact me, I'll see what I can do .
Say Hi to Claire and the kids - hopefully we'll see you all soon
Gillian

When I worked in London one of our colleagues moved to Sydney but was still on the payroll and worked remotely [she is a specialist legal editor]. It is certainly doable but I think over time you would miss the 'buzz' of an office and probably end up working locally. [For example she came back to the uk every 3-4 months]. If you are concerned about getting work locally I wouldn't worry, there is lots of construction at the moment [especially in WA] so work is NOT a problem.

If you are going to do it, get your IT department to set you up with a proper IP Phone so you can call them/be called at zero/minimal cost [you can't use skype as you would want to plug directly into their network].

i work for home, do UK work, dont miss the office buzz (from previous expereince just a load of women bitching about each other) and getting the £££s is great, esp when the exhange rate is decent

Hi Mick,

Fingers crossed for a buyer then. My Aunt just accepted an offer on her house in Nottingham that was on the market before we moved here (November 2005!!). That was meant as a sign that perhaps the market is picking up BTW, not as an indication of how long it takes to sell a house - they are in Nottingham anyway..... miles away from you  Ever feel like it's not coming out like you intend it too

It's blooming frustrating having something hold you back when you just wanna go.

Whereabouts are you thinking of settling? We've got a house for rent in Secret Harbour, but that may be too far south for you.

All the best, anyhow :)

Jules x

P.S. Meant to add; we know a few people who still work for their UK employer. I don't think it's a long term option if they need 'hands on' support, but if you can milk it to earn pounds - rock on

I have toyed with the idea on many occasions mate.

We still ( in theory ) have a uk business, that can be fully serviced via the net, but means lots of fone calls too, and possibly 3 to 4 visits minimum per yr back to the yuk.

I decided that unless things got real tough, id keep it sitting on the shelf, and thats just where it is. Albeit, I miss the money, I really with pleasure miss the grief !!

Thanks for the comments guys, just seems like an eternity now as we have had the visa for over a year and half, the novelty sort of wears a bit and everyone saying `havnt you gone yet? When are you going?` just drives you mad.

All will be good in the end I guess!

Timber, some of those guys ie Andicee / The Chief who were at the golf day / Xmas do`s were at our first meet nearly 2 years ago, just shows you how it flies and now I see them all settled, good luck to them and say Hi from Mick in Herts
