Red face Working for UK company in Sydney - Freelance First Timer

Hi there,

Me and my wife will be moving to Sydney soon.

She has already sorted out a job and through her job I am getting a dependents visa. I am working for a small UK business and would be able to continue working for it from Sydney. However, the easiest way of doing this is that we are thinking that I'll officially resign from the company and would then be working on a freelance basis and invoice my UK employer for the work I am doing.

In the beginning all my clients will are based outside Australia, but further down the line I would start looking for clients in Australia.

As a freelancer invoicing a UK company, what would my tax situation be in Australia? Would I have to get my own ABN right after arriving and before sending my first invoice? Also, on a dependents visa am I a foreign resident or an Australian resident for tax purposes?

Sorry for all the questions, all very new to me. Thank you!

Which visa does your wife have? It will have three digits.

Hi Louie, thanks for your reply.

She has a 487 Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa, which we understand used to be the 475 Visa.

Are you sure that your wife's visa number is correct?

According to the department the 487 hasn't been a current visa since 2013. And similarly the 475 hasn't been current since 2015.

And both of those visas were for regional areas anyway so you couldn't live and work in Sydney on either of them.
