Default working in NZ as OZ perm. res.

Thanks for your replies earlier, made a decision and will be going down to NZ for a few months to test the living and soak up some cooler weather. Can anybody give me information on whether I can work down there? Have been a temp res. in OZ for 2 years and a perm. res. for the last year and always thought it was just a matter of getting a stamp upon arrival.

Yes if you've got PR for Oz you are able just to fly across to NZ and live and work without problems (you don't need Oz citizenship) whilst your Oz PR is still valid.

BEWARE the reverse does not apply NZ PR gives you no rights in Oz whatsoever. Also once your OZ PR expires all rights to live and work in NZ also expire.

You automatically get NZ Permanent residency if you arrive with a valid aus PR...its just an ink stamp at passport control..just as them if it is a PR stamp if you are unsure.

If you stay in NZ your aus PR will expire after 5 years, make sure you are able to qualify for a NZ RRV if you want to leave NZ and return once your OZ PR has expired. Your NZ PR does not give you any rights in Oz, but a NZ passport will give you work and living rights

Just to claer that up... I think even if your OZ PR expires, you can remain in NZ and work, because when you received your NZ PR it gave you the right to remain indefinately. The issue is when you leave NZ (even for a holiday), without a RRV, you wont be able to get back in.

But if you are in NZ with a NZ PR stamp you can remain forever, regardless of oz PR status.......

Correct me if im wrong.....

People who tried what you're planning to do have ended up without status in both Australia and NZ.

Here's a repeat of an earlier post I've made on the same subject.

Australian PRs can in principle live and work in NZ. However:

1. You need to validate your Australian PR visa first.

2. The NZIS website is *not* clear about whether a migrant visa with a 5 year re-entry facility is counted as an Australian 'returning resident visa' which NZ does expect Australian PRs to have. Anecdotal evidence however is that any (validated) Australian permanent visa with a re-entry facility is acceptable.

3. Time spent in NZ may eventually count towards an NZ RRV or citizenship but does *not* count for an Australian RRV or citizenship. People have been left without status in both countries through not paying careful attention to the rules.

4. If you lose your Australian PR, then NZ PR gives you *no* rights to return to Australia. New Zealand citizenship will let you live in Australia, but no longer with PR rights. See http://www.nz-oz.gov.au

5. The New Zealand government is planning to increase the residence period for NZ citizenship from three years to five by 1 January 2005 (although the plan is to exempt PRs in NZ before 2005 as long as they apply in or before 2009). The equivalent period for Australian citizenship remains at two years. So if you'd like a blue passport asap, you'll have to wait a lot longer in NZ.

6. It's entirely possible that the NZ government could abolish the rights of Australian PRs in NZ, and also do away with the NZ 'indefinite RRV'.

7. Some people prefer to get Australian citizenship first, and then think about whether they would like to live in NZ. In order to get Australian citizenship, you need to meet the residence rules and plan to stay living in Australia - however, it's ok if you change your mind after being sworn in as a citizen.

8. Australian citizens living in NZ are free under current laws to become NZ citizens upon meeting the normal residence requirements. Since April 2002, they do not lose Australian citizenship as a result. The NZ government could always restrict the residence rights of Australians in NZ, or their access to PR/citizenship rights, but there is no sign of this currently.
