I doubt you will get FIFO for a graduate role. You might have to live away from a major city and drive DIDO to start for a year or two.

Re: WORKING IN THE MINES
Pretty much all the grads i know are FIFO. Might not be the case so much in the coal sector, but certainly hard rock. Exploration guys in Perth tend to be either campaign based which is based in the office for a month or two then going out bush for a couple of weeks. Smaller companies tend to do this as they dont usualy have rigs running all year. The bigger companies, with some exceptions including my own mob tend to be FIFO on either 8: or 2:1.
It is very rare to be be DIDO as unless you are working around Kal its just not feasable. Or maybe up on iron ore in which case you could be residential in Port Hedland or somewhwere, but because of housing costs up there most exploration fifo. Residential and doing DIDO is fairly rare now in WA other than Kal. Its not a bad life for a young guy, but not a good option for a family. |

Not really as the mines are only an hr an a half from Mackay so there's really no need to fly plus it gives you options on where you live there's lots of nicer areas in that region far nicer than Brisbane , I used to live in tannum sands just south of Gladstone it's not everyones cup of tea but I loved it, there's also bundaburg, harvey bay, or heading north airlie beach all lovely towns in which most people would never have the opportunity to live.

Havent read through whole thread but thought I would share my experience.
Came here on a student visa studied plastering. Worked for nearly 3yrs as a general labourer. Worked with a guy who was on his 3month unpaid leave for you know what ;), for 2 weeks. He phoned me up a few months later and said he wanted to hire me as he seen I was a hard worker. I never had any experaince or tickets and I was FIFO from Perth to Orange in NSW on a fantastic wage (3k a week after tax) was there for a few months and then got made redundant. Got a glowing reference from them and then got some tickets, the usual ones which arent expensive either if you look around. Worked for a couple of companies now on short term contracts and just got a new job FIFO to numan. It is possible to get a good job, but be aware the mines arent for everyone, you dont just rock up and they throw cash at you. 4 weeks away from your family, takeaway ur travel days and your home for 5 real days. There are a few companies that I know of that will look at you if your coming over. PS: I am on a bridging visa waiting for a 485 grad visa, seems to me if you work hard then someone will notice and help you out. |

Oh and just to point out they don't mine in Perth, so whoever suggested that was a tad unaware of what's really happening in Perth. Pay for shop work is pretty much the same as anywhere else in Aus, just more vacancies as it's low paid work. |
