Working as an IT contractor

Working as an IT contractor
I may have the option of doing a 6-9 month contract job (software development in a reasonably specialist area). Anyone been through the route of setting yourself up as self-employed in Australia to do this, and could pass on some tips on the best way to do it?

Every single person I've spoken to says not to do it that way. In addition I'm pretty sure the Australian tax office enforces an 80/20 rule on revenue - you can't have more than 80% of your total revenue from a single source.
There are a couple of methods that contractors use here, one is to go through a type of umbrella company, the other is that the agency handles PAYE.

In this case, there's no agency.
