Default Work Visa

I've been offered a 4 year work visa for a job starting in Perth early next year. Will this make my application for skilled migration any more attractive or does it make no difference at all?

The job is not in demand (engineer) and the company are not willing to sponsor me so I would still continue with my independent application.

Thanks
Karlos

PS This is a really great site. I only found it last week and have already picked up some great info.

Have you already applied for skilled migration? If so, it makes no
difference.

If not, you can usually get 5 points for Australian work experience
(unless you've already claimed bonus points for something else) after
you've worked for 6 months in Australia. But as that involves
delaying your application, with the additional risk of the pass mark
going up or requirements changing, that would not be a good idea
unless you really need the 5 points.

Good idea in that case. You will have to leave Australia for your PR
visa to be granted. A trip to Singapore will do.

Make sure Adelaide know about:
a. your application for a temporary visa, and
b. your movements into and out of Australia; and
c. your new contact address in Australia when you move there.

When you apply for the temp visa, make sure you mention your PR visa
application.

Also tell Adelaide you want to collect your visa in Singapore, if you
haven't already done so.

Not sure if it will make your application more attractive if you have already submitted it. But it will get you to OZ quicker

If you haven't yet submitted your application then I'm sure it won't do your application any harm.

Thanks Kieron,

We haven't sent our application off yet (still awaiting wife's skills assessment for basic requirements). We just need to decide if we want to take the risk of going over for 4 years with the possibility that our app could fail and we would have to come back to the UK!!

Thanks again,
Karl

Thanks very much for the info. My 457 app went in last week. We should send PR app straight after receiving 457.

Thanks again.
Karl.

Hi there - Read your thread and would be gratfeul if you could let us know how you went about getting work for 4 years and what you do visa wise. We are trying to get back to Australia after returning to the UK following a 12mth WHV in Oz. Neither of us have the skills on the shortage list for immigration and so were hoping to get work. We also thought we had to be sponsored but you don't have that - again any info please?

Can you apply for PR whilst in Perth? We didnt realise you only had to go to Singapore too to collect a visa. As you can tell we are complete novices at this!

Sorry for the 101 questions! Cheers, Jo

Hi Jo,

I was approached by a company that I worked for in UK (they also have an office in Perth). They have a position coming up in Perth and asked if I was interested. It is my understanding that they had already been allocated a number of visas so that they could bring skilled (engineer in my case) people in to fill certain positions. I'm not sure exactly how the process works.

I suggest having a look at the department of immigration website http://www.immi.gov.au/

and pick up a copy of the General skilled migration booklet. This will give you a good understanding of the process for skilled migration. I have also picked up a lot of good information on this site.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

Karl.
