IT work environment in Australia?
I am a Java developer interested in moving to Australia. Over the past
few years I have been contracting in the United States (though British by origin). I weathered the jobs recession relatively well and could continue working here if I wanted; but in the wider scope of things I feel that Australia has better long-term prospects. Here are some of the issues on my mind. I would be grateful for your opinions. 1. The employment situation has been gradually improving here in the USA. Is this true down under too? For instance, at the moment do you know of any reasonably competent developers who are still struggling/ out-of-work? 2. How happy are you with the people in your work environment? Management? Co-workers? Ethics? (Like many developers I prefer a situation that is low on stress and office politics.) 3. I realize I would be taking a pay cut, but how much? An experienced programmer earning US$60/hr here will get how much in Australia? 4. Are technology employers generally as ready to hire immigrants as Australians? 5. Lastly, what are the most attractive high-tech areas in Australia? Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth all seem good to me. Naturally I would prefer to go somewhere where there is a demand. Thanks in advance for information. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who can compare Australia with their experience in another country. |
