The people will not be ready until the point it becomes obvious they would be richer and more stable, then they would dump the pound instantly. That point is approaching, IMO. The political class have been ready for decades, and this will hopefully end the debate about whether or not Britain is a sovereign state because it certainly cannot be if it does not issue its own currency.
