Default work for a carpenter in Adelaide?

Hello

This is our first post but have been reading with interest and absorbing all of the info you guys have all contributed. Its time to ask our own questions now though!!

We are hoping to migrate next summer/autumn and after deciding on Adelaide, then Perth, then Brisbane/Sunshine Coast, we are settling on the idea of Adelaide (mainly because of the climate and the perceived lifestyle - we don't do busy cities!). One of the main priorities is my OH getting enough work - he's an experienced carpenter joiner.

After hearing about this trade being highly in demand in Oz, and then various comments on here about this not being entirely accurate, we are starting to get a bit concerned. Obviously we can't predict what things will be like next year but it would be good to get an idea of the current situation.

Anyone got any comments...?

Thanks very much

Rachel

HI Rachel

i don't know if you've seen these sites

http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/

http://s2.invisionfree.com/Adelaideb...ex.php?act=idx

They are based in Adelaide and there are more of us on there with local knowledge. There is a lot of building going on in the north East and the Southern suburbs. If your husband wants to work for himself, he'll have to get a licence but he can work as an employee straight off the bat.

Have a look at the Master Builders Website - here

http://www.mbasa.com.au

You should be able to find out about courses there and Office of Consumer & Business Affairs (OCBA) is the place to go for licences, some you can do as long distance learning. Site here

http://www.ocba.sa.gov.au/licensing/

My husband has been a Site Supervisor for a few of the builders in Adelaide, Chippies can earn anything from $20 - $35 an hour. you don't put a price in to a big builder, they tell you what they will pay you.

Hope that helps

Jo
