Default work this 1 out, then dont come

January 2008

A South Australian painting contractor had so much work he offered me a all expenses paid sponsors visa to include application and medical costs, and a 1 way ticket, 12 month rent free accommodation, company vehicle and $30 a hour. Thought it was to good to be true so turned it down.

Spoke to him today about the dreadfully employment in Gold Coast and the possibility of work down in SA........... he replied that he had laid off his entite work force including all those on sponsored visa's (god know's what they going to do) and 15 out of 18 office staff and was just hiring and firing as when required. All his labour was now self-employed paying $20 a hour (bsn required).

He was looking for 1 brush hand paying minimum wages and had 55 applicants.

Now believe us that things are really bad !

Not really sure why people on this forum feel they have to ram this sort of stuff into everyone faces about how 'bad' things are in Australia right now.

There are those who feel its there duty to 'warn' people from there own experinces, which is fair enough. But there is also those who dispite the downturn are still prepared to take the risk and emmigrate.

This doens't mean we don't believe you or are not aware of how bad things are.

Wonder when the usual but it's worse in the UK poster will be along?
I'd say people do need to be aware of how things are in Aus, I've seen an awful lot of I'm leaving UK as it's crap and once I get to Aus it'll all be wonderful, stuff from some posters on here

seeing how dinner dash is living in qld and you are in cornwall i`d say that he was a dam site more qualified than you to comment on the state of employment in au

It all depends on the job/trade that you do.

If you go into a saturated market then you will be disappointed. Some people are still going into a specialist field which determines their need in Oz.

Ready to get my head blown off for this but what I see are (SOME) people who cannot get jobs over in the UK departing to Oz to work and the Oz government quite rightly are trying to keep australians employed..

If the UK did the same some years ago, maybe we wouldnt be in the position we are in.

For one, the way the Oz government looks after its own is admirable and is one of the reasons I am looking to migrate as I feel the UK should have been doing this a long time ago.

My thoughts no one elses.

Or maybe this bloke has same amount of work and is now just paying the subbies less so therefore he is making more money.

If you have a wage slave mentality then you might well suffer, but some of us brought our own businesses over with us - or set up once we got here. My business has increased two-fold since the world disappeared up its own financial arse. It depends where you live as to what the job situation is - and also what you do for a living.

A blinkered view admittedly, but from over in the UK (for another month anyway), I would suggest that the Oz government appears to be more righteous and concerned about its own than the UK does and has in the past.

And these are soundbites as I am no political animal but the way the that the Oz government handles its restrictive immigration policy, no nonsense approach to religious bias and admission that the recession means that immigration will be cut to reduce its impacts slights of more forward thinking than the UK have ever implemented.

A lot of people migrate for the weather!

Good on yer Hutch, innovation, exactly what Australia needs right now.

immigration cuts ? this year will still be the biggest intake of immigrants for decades
yes they cut trade jobs recentley but that in my opinion was more to do with winning the qld state elections than a forward thinking policy

I suppose when we are there and under the regime, any government and its impacts will be more apparent than you when see them from afar using rose tinted specs.

I'm not sure how you manage to guage the feelings of Australians (their "own") so well when you live in the UK, but I can assure you if you read stories about changes to immigration quotas in the Australian press you will see exactly the same types of reader comments as you would see in the immigrant hating rags in the UK.

As steve'o has mentioned, and the stats are all over this site, 2008/9 will be the biggest immigration intake ever.

Immigration policy isn't simple....most economists and policymakers will tell you that slamming the door shut is exactly the wrong thing to do.

Not sure what you mean about no nonsense approach to religious bias....please don't quote Kevin Rudd's fabled 'speech'!
