Lots and lots of threads on this - one that I remember recently deals with beds and bedding :

Also search for washing machine threads - if you have a front-loader, BRING IT!!!! I lost another shirt today to that invention my hubby calls a top-loader. Its so savage I am about to start throwing bones to it!

Personal opinion, but I would say bring all you can. You will have better things to do than to try and buy stuff, a lot of things are more expensive, and unless you know the area to which you are going, it can take you a long time to get orientated enough to find the best shops with the best deals.

Say you need a 20ft container - that's gonna cost you about 5k incuding insurance. Starting in the lounge, walk round your house, add up the cost of your furniture and ALL your belongings and see how far you get before you reach 5k. I bet you don't even get out of the lounge!

As Polly says too, going out shopping for the mundane things like an ironing board, laundry basket, when you get there is a pain in the butt.

Whether furniture is cheaper in Oz or not depends on the quality of furnitire you have/intend to buy.

I agree
Our stuff is worth a lot more than the cost of shipping.

I was also quite surprised at the cost and often pooor quality of furniture and fittings in Australia.

I would hate to have to refit a house if I had to buy good quality stuff in Australia :scared:

As someone else said recently, part of the problem is a lack of middle ground for shopping of all kinds - you can get 'cheap and tacky', or you can get 'very expensive' but theres very little in the middle.
