It would also be interesting to know how the cost saving weighs up against the amount of landfill and waste etc.

Look at the car scrapping scheme here in the UK all basically to make some more money for car manufacturers.

BTW, the way I did it was to buy a new base unit with answering machine etc. in it - then use the DECT handsets I bought from the UK registered on it.

That way I had no problem with cables, etc. and also didn't need to buy all new again.

Nah - the UK uses this

and Australia uses this or this

what you often find is the lead connecting the UK phone to the wall has something like the second of these the other end of it - so you can swap cables for one with the same plug either end and have it work. However for the cost of a base unit, it's not usually worth it.

Don't forget, often you rent a new house before your container of stuff from the UK gets here. Therefore planning to buy at least a base unit here is a sensible move.

I think it won't bother like you say I may probably need one before the container arrives and also I would hate to bring it over then end up throwing it away.

Would you really need a landline phone at all?

If you get cable for Internet and mobile phones...

To you still have the packaging that your phone came in? Often telephones come with the adapter included.
