I'd employ him. I bloody well hate painting. Especially when the bristles fall out the brush and you don't notice until it's dried.

Painters in OZ are usually employed on a subcontract basis (per job with the main contractor charging the client and then paying the painters that work for him) The bsa laws have just changed so I am not sure if the painting contractor needs a lic (plumbers, sparks, chippies all do) , quick check on the bsa website says all contractors performing work over $1100 so its quite possible they do. The workers just get wages.
The award wage for most trades is around $22 an hour on a casual basis, less if you want sick and hols.

If your eligible to become a contractor and paint houses the current rate is $18 a sm inside 3 coats, and $10 outside 2 coats of UV resistant. The guys working for the contractors seem to take home around $700. The contractor willl earn however many jobs he takes on X the above sm rates minus, tax, gst, overheads, paint , insurances and wages to the guys who work for him.

Close friend of mine in Brisbane works for www.higginscoatings.com.au who I think are the biggest painting co. in QLD/Australia.
They are always looking for staff - especially those that like heights!

The Gold Coast. Not enough tradesman of any type! With so much new development, tradesman in high demand.
