Seems odd that some people miss the bigger picture, some lovely place in Aus and the UK, just as there are bad in both as well. Never been anywhere that was without the odd scumbag or government that is perfect. Wonder why the need to compare and moan about the UK comes from. I have a good life here and enjoy UK for many reasons, hope that we can replicate what we have here but with a better climate in Aus (thought not looking forward to days of over 40 degrees) I would hate to have days of 40 degrees aswell. Our hottest day in 2007 was 37.8 °C, on 12th March 2007 (not even in Summer). The highest in Dec 2007 was 31.6 °C, Jan 2008 was 32.1 °C. I used to live in Sydney, where we did often get 40°C + in summer, but I now live in cooler QLD  (Bayside is cooler) |

would rather be cold than too hot
I hate the cold. Sometimes, in the winter, when it gets down to about 12 °C, I consider moving further north to Cairns or the like, for warmer winter weather. |
Re: Why are you moving to Oz?
We are moving for our kids, the outdoor life and focus on sports.
I am a mad keen diver, photographer and wine drinker, my wife loves sunshine and our kids love being boys - out and about, free to roam. So we want an environment where the weather and levels of street crime/religious intolerance/bleedin' misery!! are more manageable than where we live at moment. I have noticed as I grow older that I want more heat (maybe the hours spent in 8 degree C water). My wife was brought up in a hot climate, so Oz here we come. It was 40 degrees plus on Christmas day in Perth last year and we loved it......bring it on!! Disagree with posts ref weight issues in Oz - every chart that predicts the rise in obesity in the developed world has Oz at the bottom of the pile - least likely to have problems with this compared to Uk and particularly Scotland!! It has one of the highest levels of adult participation in organised sports in the world. And anyway, we fancy a change.......will work hard wherever, just prefer my time off in the sunshine..... Twinset |
Re: Why are you moving to Oz?
I moved here a year ago to be with my partner - he is from Melbourne.
Best decision I ever made!! |
Re: Why are you moving to Oz?
We are moving to Oz coz my hubby applied for a job and got offered it!
We should have our visa in 2 weeks but to be honest with you I am starting to have serious doubts about moving to Oz... Mind you we still haven't got a buyer for our house... |

Guess it becomes real for everyone at different stages. Whatever you decide, may the best thing happen for all concerned.....:) Personally, I have just been out in the dark in the freezing rain to pick up the kids from their evening activities and I will not miss this kind of weather at all!! Bring it on!! Twinset |

Totally agree with above. A pal has just returned from Perth - looks 3 years younger, much healthier and lost a little weight. Her excuse is that it was so much better quality of life and not the mad-house environment over here.....

Perth has far more fast-food outlets over here (virtually every corner) and I have noticed people are defiantly fatter over here especially the kids.

Not sure you'll be allowed to get away with such outrageous statements, I mean all Aussies are toned and tanned, swim every day and power walk :p

Thanks Twinset! It's just such a hard decision to make! Never been to Oz either so dunno wot I'm really letting myself in for...and we have small children so there's more to think about...how easy life was before children and mortgages eh???
My wife and I talk at least once a week about the ups of moving: sunshine, outdoors, me being a barbie king, tinnies over sunset, kids roaming, positive attitude, the countryside, beaches, fresh veggies, fish, frontier spirit, diving, new lease of life in new jobs, housing, ??pool?? beachcombing, playparks that are fit for purpose, the light, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, redbacks, outback, fish, pelagics, reggo, all the things we need to learn about etc.... The worst that can happen is you try it, don't enjoy it and at least you won't be sitting over a glass of wine in 10 year's time wondering "what if..." The best that can hapen is that you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago..... FWIW, been to Oz twice, (wife been bucketloads, lucky her) and it is the ONLY country we have come back from both saying we would live there......I would rather have mortgage in the sun and kids with dual passports.......40 years of rain and damp have seen to that. (yes, I really am that old and knocking on the door of senility - but, interestingly, gtting a new lease of life just thinking about Oz.....) Twinset |

Know where you are at: firm believer that you need to be moving towards something, not moving away from something else i.e. positive energy motivstes your move, not negative energy.

However, maybe because I "expected" perfection from my 'holiday experiences', I did have problems settling. A return to the UK, vowing never to set foot in Australia again, seemed to change things. I was then able to compare "real life in Australia" to "real life in England" and .... Well, I am now back and totally settled in Australia, although in QLD, not Sydney were I originally went. It is good to have doubts, think about things, find out more info, and as Baden Powell said "Be Prepared" ;) I have some 'what if's' as well. What if I had never come here in the first place ? Would I still be wondering ? What if I had never returned to the UK ? Would I be stuck here, hating things ? What if I had never been divorced.... OK, that's easy.... [deleted!!!] |

I'm curious to see if our reasons for wanting to move to Oz are similar to those of others that are making the move. Ours are as follows:
- Better [sized] house for the money - housing in the UK is cripplingly expensive. I like the 'open-plan' floor-plan style housing in Oz. The houses here in the UK are like rabbit hutches and are generally compartmentalised. - Better weather. We've lived in Florida and are headed to Melbourne - similar in many ways and we like the heat. - More of an outdoor lifestyle. I do have to admit, however, that we'll miss visiting castles and ruins, which is how we've enjoyed many holidays touring around the Biritish Isles. We'll have to find something else in Oz since there is a distinct shortage of castles there. - Better life for the children (currently 2 & 3 - not yet in school). OK, this is more of a wish than an expectation. I'm not terribly impressed with the overall schooling system in the UK. Private schooling in Oz is MUCH cheaper than in the UK. - Cheaper overall cost of living. I recognise things are getting more expensive in Oz so I'm not sure if this really holds water any more. - Closer to relatives that we like. This is a double-edged sword since we'll be farther away from parents and siblings - the only true downside that I can see so far. - Better working conditions - i.e., hopefully not such a depressing commute to work on a crap public transport network (particularly in the height of Summer and Winter). - CDM We're moving for sunshine!!! I love the sun so does the husband. He'll be pretty much doing the same kind of work for a little bit more money... buuuut we're looking forward to weekend family time. Being able to spend more time outside with our son is worth more than anything. Also I love experiencing new things and Australia is our new thing. I would've liked to have gone travelling and so would have my husband but things got in the way ... mortgage, marriage, jobs etc. This our chance to experience new things but in a more serious way.
