Why is the population of Australia only 20 million?
With all the immigration to australia why is the population stagnant at 20million? Are people leaving the country in equal numbers?

A large part of Australia is desert, and much of the country is uninhabitable due to extremes of weather. Look at the cities - arranged around the coast, thats due to climate, rainfall and temperature.

I would guess that the lack of maternity pay would stop people such as myself who do come here from having kids. How does anyone afford it?????

I don't understand how any small to medium size business can afford to pay maternity leave? And would compulsory maternity leave make employers think twice about employing a young woman?

On a more serious note: Australia's population is not "static". It has quadrupled since the end of WWI. Growth is currently around 1.4% p.a.
