Why is Perth So Expensive
I've been offered a relatively well paid job in Perth but when I look at having to pay tax at 47%, the high rental accommodation, schooling and daily cost of living expenses, I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it!!
LAFHA will help to some extent, but I would like to hear from Brits that have recently made the move to Perth, and whether or not they have regretted it.
Cheers

There is a proposal for LAFHA to be abolished, recently discussed in the main Australia board. I stopped following that discussion about half way through, but from what I have seen it was gathering momentum.
Also, 47% sounds a bit steep, have you come up with that or was it a ATO calculator that suggested the figure?

Top rate is 45%....which I guess kicks in for a lot of mining types.
OP as others have said...if your negotiations / offer include LAFHA components to make up the package to what you want then stop that now. You will almost certainly not be eligible for LAFHA under the proposed new arrangements.

47 percent ..... Are you sure? Don't count on LAHFA. Easiest way to work it out. Divide your proposed gross salary in AU by your current gross in GBP and if you're over 2.2 then you're good for a start - I would negotiate to 2.5 to ensure it's worthwhile.

My husband earns a similar amount to this and he definitely doesn't pay almost 50% tax.

I'm retired, ipay 6 figures per yr in tax,the only regret I have is that I don't pay $1 MILLION IN TAX YEARLY.Imagine earning around 2.3 million, giving the tax man 1 million, the day to day sruggle of trying to get by on $1.3 million.
How I envy the people on an aged pension, the luxury of not paying tax and getting by on 26k a year, the luxurious life they must lead by not paying tax.
Have a go at thinking,a wonderful hobby to have.I will be amazed if you can answer this question..
Would you be better off having a high income and paying tax at an average of say 40%,or would you be better off having a low income and paying a small amuont of tax.
I'll be amaxed if you can answer.
