We have a pool, 11m x 4m with 200% solar heating, that gives us 8 months a year when we can use it comfortably which suits us fine.

Re: Why not many pools in Melbourne?
You're all jealous of the Queensland climate, we have probably had the coolest summer in years but the pool was in use from late October to a week ago when after doing a bit of work in the garden, it felt like the only right thing to do but cool down in the pool for 20 minutes with a beer!
I must admit, the water was a fair bit cooler than Dec/Jan/Feb but with solar heating a pool blanket and a reasonably hot afternoon it was fine.
The night time temps are a big factor in keeping the water at a decent temp, it gets to a point where the water needs heated up too much and not long enough a day to do it!
Wonder if daylight savings would help, it apparently affects things like curtains and carpets and when the cows milk, might help the pool temps too...
