It depends on the hospital and type of course you've undertaken. The Herts ENP course is the one thats mostly recognised here. The Masters courses run here are quite frankly, not up to the standard of the UK. A colleague of mine is presently doing her Masters in Advanced Nursing Practice; certainly not as difficult! Employers play a huge part tho. I was very lucky in the fact that my employers recognised specialist skills and experienced. I explained during my interview the need for me to maintain my skills and competences and they completely agreed. It helps the GP's out no end that I can see all of the minor injuries, dressings etc Have also taken on role of nurse educator within the dept which is great as the aus nurses want so much to be 'doing more'. They're so experienced and so knowledgable but they've never been able to do anything autonomously! How frustrated must they be! Have lots of little study/practical sessions planned. In return they're teaching me lots of stuff too so its give and take. One of the nurses has done her pap smear providers course, others have done their child immunisation, wound care etc Things are moving be it slowly. My boss did warn me that aus nursing as a whole is 10 yrs behind the uk, qld is double that! I think you just have to be prepared to take a step back, accept how its done here then slowly change the way of thinking. Everything takes time here

However I wouldnt say Acton is populated mainly by Aussies.Acton is a proper melting pot.The main accent lately has a Eastern European feel to it
I live in Acton and I am an Aussie. Most of us actually want to stay away from Acton but end up there because it's cheap and you can get a room there easily. You should bear in mind we are all youngens, in our early 20s. I highly doubt my mother would ever move to London and decide to move to Acton Town or Earls Court for the ' Aussie factor'. If I decided to actually live here my whole life I would never consider living in Acton Town.

I know what you mean though, and do completely understand why you would need Brit friends in Australia. You can relate to them better!

The British I've met in London have a different attitude, we lead different lives. I am here to party and then go home to Australia and get a real job and be sensible. Whereas the Brits are here living their normal lives, working in real jobs... I find the Brits a little less friendly than the average Aussie as well (probably because I am Aussie so we automatically have a connection that I can't share with a Brit).

Needless to say, the Brits are awesome people and I love the fact that they are having my in their beautiful country for a little while.

I do admit that I like having Brit friends because I can identify with them - phrases, words, humour, experiences, we've all been through the same stuff. But equally, if I like a person I don't care what nationality they are. I don't say to myself "right, this week I'm only friendly with Aussies and don't want to talk to the Brits", or vice versa. Didn't act like that in the UK and don't act like it here.
Pollyana I concur.
Dare to be yourself! Sod the prejudice and intolerance of some who have nothing better to do that criticise those that know and "like" who they are. In the nursing profession we share a common goal irrespective of our peers nationality, colour or culture; this makes for an uncommon bonding. If I move to Australia or New Zealand I will do my utmost to integrate and show respect for my new home and surroundings, but never at the expense of losing my national identity. Though we have experienced shameful episodes in our history and I cringe when I see the arrogant way some of my countrymen behave; with all of her faults I believe that Britain has far more to be proud of than ashamed of. Sometimes it seems that the loudest "Knock the Brit" and Britain noises, emanate from areas where people are envious of the British identity and strangely enough from people with some British connection..I have travelled through Holland, Denmark and various other countries where (soccer thugs apart) they love us.
The other evening while studying a school atlas, my youngest son said "Mum, look how tiny G.Britain is compared with most of the other countries, we must have been great to have done so much"... While the great may be questioned today, her many legacies are visible throughout the world, not least of all in the language we are using to communicating with here.

Hi,
We were the same, whats the point of going to Australia and not mixing with Australians? Might as well stay in the UK! The Aussies are a great bunch, they are very welcoming and helpful, our neighbours are brill, they call round every day to see if we need anything from the shop and to see we are ok.
Its a great place and they are great people!!
