Default WHV question re. self employment

Hi everyone, i'm in a bit of a pickle.

I am coming to Aus on a Working Holiday Visa in April. I would like to carry on working as a bricklayer so i get a feel for construction work in Aus should i decide to emigrate.

So far i know i apply for a TFN as soon as i arrive. I will be in Melbourne so i can legally work for a licenced builder without having to get a licence myself.
The confusing part is the ABN. I checked my entitlement and it seems as long as i am given a price or day rate by the builder, and not quoting the price myself, I am not entitled to an ABN. Also i would question weather i could even get one on a WHV?

Does this sound correct? Any Tradies in Victoria that can confirm you can work on a day rate without needing an ABN?

Thanks,

Lee.
